How NFL Free Agency Moves Have Impacted the Buffalo Bills’ Futures Odds
Have the goings-on in the NFL free agency market impacted the Buffalo Bills Super Bowl futures odds?
Not much, it seems. You’d think those odds would be impacted – so far, the Bills addressed the offensive line by signing versatile guard Connor McGovern to a reported three-year $23 million deal. That’s it. They made some moves around the edges – re-signing punter Sam Martin (three years), special teams/LB Tyler Matakevich (one year), CB Cam Lewis (one year) and linebacker Tyrel Dodson (one year).
But they lost Pro Bowl LB Tremaine Edmunds. The Bears signed him to a massive four-year $72 million contract. That’s a tough one to swallow since the Bills spent five years developing Edmunds and the Bears get to reap the benefits.
That’s a gaping hole the Bills now have to fill for a defence that allowed just 17.9 points per game last season (second in the league) and 319 total yards per game (sixth in the league). Free agent inside linebackers Zach Cunningham, Devin Bush, Anthony Walker Jr. and Lavonte David are a few solid replacement candidates still out there.
Players the Bills Could Target
The Bills are rumoured to be in on running back Jamaal Williams, who would give them another short-yardage option. Right now, Bills QB Josh Allen is their short-yardage guy, and that’s not sustainable. The Bills will likely lose RB Devin Singletary, also a free agent, so plugging in the second spot next to 5-foot-11, 190-pound James Cook with a 6-0, 224-pound bruiser who led the NFL with 17 TDs last season (plus 1,000 yards rushing) sounds good to us.
The Bills are also rumoured to also be looking at former Pro Bowl receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who looks like he could be a difference-maker again after sitting out last season with an ACL injury. The Bills were one of 12 teams watching his workout on Friday.
One report had the Bills with the inside track because they hired receivers coach Adam Henry – and he has a connection with Beckham going back to their time together at LSU. And don’t forget that former Rams teammate Von Miller has no doubt been recruiting him as well.
Then came the news the Bills had created around $32 million in cap space after restructuring the contracts of Allen and OLB Miller.
Don’t forget safety Jordan Poyer is still out there. But his comments a few days ago about cumbersome taxes living in New York State have us pessimistic that the Bills can bring him back.
Buffalo Bills Super Bowl Odds
Proline currently as Super Bowl LVIII winner as follows: Kansas City Chiefs (6.0), Bills (7.0), San Francisco 49ers (7.50), Philadelphia Eagles (8.50), Cincinnati Bengals (9.50), Dallas Cowboys (14.0), New York Jets (rumoured to be closer to getting QB Aaron Rodgers in a trade with Green Bay, 15.0), Los Angeles Chargers (21.0) and Baltimore Ravens (26.0).
BetMGM has the Chiefs at 6.50, the Bills at 9.50, followed by the Bengals (10.0), Eagles (10.0), 49ers (10.0), Jets (15.0), Cowboys (19.0), Chargers (21.0), Ravens (26.0) and Lions (26.0).
The Bills have a great core, and all are signed – Allen, Miller, Micah Hyde, Matt Milano, Tre’Davious White, Stefon Diggs, Dawson Knox, and others. The McGovern signing should give Allen more time in the pocket.
Re-signing Poyer to team up again next to a healthy Hyde at safety will send a message to the rest of the team and the fanbase for GM Brandon Beane to prioritize. Poyer is one of the better free agents available, so maybe the fact he hasn’t signed elsewhere yet means Beane is going hard at him. The Bills also have to decide what to do with free agents DEs Jordan Phillips and Shaq Lawson.
The AFC East is only getting stronger, especially if Rodgers goes to the Jets. The noose is getting tighter in Buffalo. Despite what the futures show, that devastating loss at home to the Bengals in the divisional round showed how much work they still need to do.
