Royal Ascot 2023: Selections

Royal Ascot 3

14:30 - BEUATIFUL DIAMOND

Renowned for his exceptional skills in training juvenile horses, Karl Burke appears to have another potential star in his stable with the promising BEAUTIFUL DIAMOND. The manner in which she surged ahead of the competition during her debut at Nottingham was truly impressive, showcasing her undeniable talent. Once she took the lead, she displayed an unwavering determination, leaving no opportunity for others to catch up. Considering that Burke triumphed in the same race last year with Dramatised, there is a strong anticipation for him to secure consecutive victories in this renewal with the highly regarded Beautiful Diamond.

15:05 - DON'T TELL CLAIRE

Next up is the highly anticipated Kensington Palace Handicap, a thrilling mile-long race. which is an opportunity to take a chance, and the horse most likely to take a risk on is DON'T TELL CLAIRE, trained by Danny and Clair Kubler and ridden by Jack Mitchell. This mare has displayed promising form at Ascot and put up a respectable performance when finishing third at this very track on May 13. While it could be argued that she may prefer some give in the ground, it's worth noting that she has previously triumphed on fast ground at this course. Additionally, in the 2022 edition of this event, she finished eighth while carrying a higher handicap.

15:40 - PROSPEROUS VOYAGE

Amongst this field, there are several contenders who closely match each other in terms of their performance figures. However, the top choice is Ralph Beckett's PROSPEROUS VOYAGE. Having won a Group 1 race over a straight 1 mile last summer, this horse displayed a return to form with a strong finish and a victory in a tactical race at Epsom just 18 days ago. Jumbly, on her stable debut last month, showed further improvement by finishing as the runner-up in a Group 2 event at the Curragh, making her a formidable competitor. Following closely is Random Harvest, who put up a bold effort and secured the second position in the previous race where PROSPEROUS VOYAGE emerged victorious. Another notable contender is Grande Dame from the Gosdens' stable, who exhibited consistent progress in her six runs last season and might have more potential to offer in this race.

16:20 – BAY BRIDGE

After finishing as the runner-up in this race last year, with State Of Rest delivering an impressive front-running performance, BAY BRIDGE seeks redemption as he aims to secure his second Group 1 victory over this course and distance in the Champion Stakes. Demonstrating his potential, Bay Bridge showcased his capabilities by claiming victory in the same race last October. Despite encountering some trouble with a blocked path and finishing second to Luxembourg in the recent Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, he is expected to bounce back and avenge his defeat. However, it is important to note that Luxembourg, who triumphed in their previous encounter, remains a formidable opponent and should be regarded with caution.

17:00 – DUNUM

Irish contender, DUNUM, possesses a highly reliable profile and the potential for further improvement, making him an enticing choice for this contest. With his trainer currently in outstanding form this month, the timing appears perfect for his participation. Ghaly, displaying notable progress and possessing strong credentials, stands as the second choice, while Blue For You, who shares a piece of promising form with the former, follows closely. Perotto, with obvious claims, and Astro King, showing consistency, are both expected to deliver commendable performances. Additionally, the unexposed Chasing Aphrodite and Reach For The Moon, making their handicap debut, deserve consideration and round out the list of suggestions.

17:35 - ST VINCENTS GARDEN

Despite finishing last among a field of six in a 1 mile 5 furlongs Listed race at Navan last month, ST VINCENTS GARDEN showcased resilience by rallying and being beaten by just over 2 lengths in that sluggishly paced contest. This performance is indicative of great promise for his future in endurance races. Having only raced three times, he carries ample potential for improvement. Peking Opera, the victor in that Navan race, possesses strong credentials and stands as a notable contender. However, the main threat could arise from Gregory, who impressively claimed a Listed victory over 1 mile 3 furlongs at Goodwood in his most recent outing. Given his breeding, Gregory appears well-suited to this distance. Chesspiece is another worth considering in the competition.

18:10 –  WORLD OF DARCY

Aidan O'Brien has displayed his prowess in this race, securing three victories in the last eight editions. Among his two contenders, Johannes Brahms appears to be the standout choice. However, it remains to be seen whether his middle draw will prove advantageous, considering that in nine out of the last ten runnings, winners have emerged from horses drawn near one of the flanks. This central positioning may also pose a challenge for Maximum Impact and Bombay Bazaar, despite their solid claims in other aspects. Barnwell Boy left a strong impression with a victorious debut at Goodwood and being positioned next to the far rail enhances his prospects, making him a compelling option to consider. Nevertheless, the preference leans towards Karl Burke's WORLD OF DARCY, who is drawn against the stands' rail. Burke's stable has been enjoying a remarkable season with their juvenile horses, and although World of Darcy couldn't match up to stablemate Elite Status in the National Stakes at Sandown in their previous encounter, his performance was still commendable.

Your day-by-day guide to Royal Ascot 2023

Royal Ascot 2

There are so many huge races taking place every day during the five days of Royal Ascot meeting, but we've taken a look at what we consider to be the race to watch on each day, as well as our expert pick, too!

Tuesday June 20

Race to watch: In the upcoming King's Stand Stakes, the spotlight is on two formidable contenders: Highfield Princess, the seasoned Yorkshire-bred runner who has consistently improved with time, and Coolangatta, the exceptional filly hailing from Australia. Highfield Princess has displayed remarkable progression as she has matured. With each passing race, her speed and performance have reached new heights, making her a force to be reckoned with in this competition. Coolangatta arrives on the scene as a highly touted filly from Australia. With a reputation for excellence, she has garnered significant attention and anticipation. Her exceptional skills and pedigree mark her as a top contender in this prestigious race.

Tip of the day: Zoulu Chief in the Coventry Stakes (3.05pm). A 150-1 winner of his last start, the result has been dismissed all round. Never came out of his comfort zone winning by five lengths that day and sure to start a big price again.

Wednesday June 21

Race to watch: The highly anticipated event to watch out for is the Prince of Wales's Stakes, where the 2021 Derby champion aims to secure his first Group One victory over a distance of one mile and a quarter, solidifying his reputation as a potential stallion. He will face tough competition from Bay Bridge, who emerged victorious over him in the Champion Stakes. However, with the ground conditions favoring a faster track, the tables could turn this time around.

Pick of the day: Intellogent in the Royal Hunt Cup (5pm) likes fast ground and Ascot. He was runner-up in this race 12 months ago only beaten half a length. This year he comes in 1lb lower in the ratings - which should give him half a length to spare!

Thursday June 22

Race to watch: The Norfolk Stakes is a race that demands your full attention, as it flashes by in the blink of an eye. While it's been a while since we witnessed American two-year-olds displaying their blistering speed on this track, Wesley Ward's American Rascal appears to be a standout contender. In his sole start at Keeneland, he triumphed convincingly over four and a half furlongs, leaving his rivals trailing behind by a remarkable margin of 10 and a half lengths. It's worth noting that American Rascal is the offspring of Lady Aurelia, a formidable mare who claimed victory in both the Queen Mary and King's Stand Stakes under Ward's guidance.

Pick of the day: Two years ago Subjectivist was as good a Gold Cup winner as there had been for a long time. An injury looked like putting paid to his career but he’s been brought back. He’s been a bit rusty but two runs should have put him right and in an open Gold Cup (4.20pm) he looks a steal at 8-1.

Friday June 23

Race to watch: The King Edward VII Stakes, often regarded as the Derby consolation race, presents an opportunity for the King and Queen to secure a victory at the esteemed Royal meeting this week. Circle of Fire emerges as their most promising contender in this event. Despite a subpar performance on the all-weather surface in the previous race, Circle of Fire is expected to thrive on turf, making a significant improvement in his performance.

Pick of the day: Shaquille in the Commonwealth Cup (4.20). Little Big Bear will be a short priced favorite but he came up the golden highway when impressive at Haydock and it might be worth opposing such a short-priced runner.

Saturday June 24

Race to watch: The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes marks a significant moment in the career of Richard Gibson, a prominent trainer originally hailing from Northumberland. Gibson has been regarded as one of the finest exports from our shores, having achieved great success in both France and Hong Kong. As he approaches his final season in the Far East, all eyes are on Wellington, one of the sprinting stars in Hong Kong, to see if he can provide Gibson with a victorious send-off at Royal Ascot. It will undoubtedly be an intriguing spectacle as we witness if Wellington can secure a memorable win and bid farewell to Gibson's tenure in Hong Kong with a resounding triumph.

Pick of the day: Chipstead in the Wokingham Handicap. An improving sprinter whose brother was Oxted who won the July Cup and King’s Stand Stakes, an impressive winner at York last time.
