Roulette Casino Bonuses

Promotional offers play a significant role in the online casino world. When you visit one of the best online roulette sites, you will find a selection of top promotions. Top online roulette sites use bonuses to entice new players and to keep current customers happy. They come in all shapes and sizes, and there is often something for everyone.

Most casino bonuses come with a wagering requirement, which is the number of times you must wager a bonus before claiming it. For example, the following are typical offers for roulette casinos:

  • Welcome Bonus – Also known as a sign-up bonus, a welcome package is a casino's way to attract new customers. The most common type of welcome bonus is a deposit match, where the roulette casino gives a percentage of your first deposit as a bonus.
  • Cashback Bonus – One of the most sought-after promotions when playing roulette online is a cashback bonus, but you need to be a loyal member of roulette sites to get this reward. For players who spend time and money on a casino, there is sometimes a small cashback reward available without a wagering requirement.
  • Free Spins – Many roulette players also love to play online slots from time to time. One of the most popular casino bonuses has traditionally been the free spins promo. As the name suggests, this bonus gives you free spins on a specific slot game on a casino site.
  • No Deposit Bonus – Most gamblers love a no deposit bonus because it does exactly what it says on the tin. You can get bonus cash to play online roulette or other casino games without needing to make a deposit.
  • Deposit Match – A deposit match bonus is usually a part of a welcome package, while online casinos also run similar promos for existing players. It is a percentage match of a deposit you make. For example, if you deposit £20 and the deposit match is 50%, you will get an additional £10 in bonus credits.
  • Payment Method Deal – Sometimes, a casino will offer special rewards if you use a specific payment method to deposit money. It is also worth noting that some online roulette bonuses do not allow you to use specific payment platforms, such as e-wallets like Skrill.

Types of Roulette Games to Play

Over the years, different variants of this household name have sprung up. Generally, most players will encounter the same popular roulette variants at the top-rated roulette sites Canada, while some casinos expand to more.

European Roulette

European roulette is the original version of the game and is the most common form of roulette out there. Players have the opportunity to place a bet on any number from 1-36, red or black and odd or even. There is also a green zero on the wheel, commonly referred to as the house number.

As its name suggests, the house number belongs to the dealer and gives the house a 2.70% chance of taking everything on the table should the ball end up on the green zero. This is no-frills roulette and the most straightforward and purest form of the game.

American Roulette

American roulette is derived from the European roulette version but was changed slightly to benefit the house. This was done by adding a double-zero pocket to the wheel, almost doubling the house edge to 5% and putting gamblers at a disadvantage.

American roulette is played mainly in the States, and many famous casinos in places such as Las Vegas will stick with the European incarnation, with punters often put off by a wheel weighted towards the house. With this in mind, make sure to check if the table is operating by the European or American rules before you play roulette games. In some casinos, there may also be a third type of roulette.

French Roulette

French roulette is often the term given to European roulette; however, there is a slight twist. The rules are essentially the same, but if the ball lands on the house number, the player can take back half their stake or leave it on the table for the next bet. In the online version of this game, the stake is usually refunded automatically.

Live Roulette

In recent years, live dealer online casino games have become popular. Gamblers like that live dealer roulette games combine the comfort and convenience of digital casinos but add the realism of a human dealer and land-based casino setting.

Our team of roulette experts at Gambling.com scour the iGaming realm to find the best live roulette experiences and recommend them to you. When you visit a live roulette casino, there are several benefits you get from playing with a live dealer:

  • Wide Selection of Live Online Roulette Games – You can enjoy all popular roulette variations. For example, there are live dealer versions of European Roulette, American Roulette, Speed Roulette, Multi-Wheel Roulette and more.
  • Human Dealers – Perhaps the most significant benefit of live online roulette games is playing with an actual human dealer. Online casinos or game developers stream live HD video feeds to gamblers, who can watch the dealer spin the wheel and throw the ball. It is as close as you can get to a real casino experience from the comfort of your own home.
  • Player Interaction – Besides seeing the dealer during a live online casino game, casinos want the most authentic experience possible, so they encourage you to have healthy banter and conversations with dealers and fellow players.
  • Tangible Outcomes – While the outcome of every spin of the online roulette wheel is entirely random, there is nothing quite like the actual experience of seeing a mechanical wheel and a real ball landing in a number pocket. When you play live dealer roulette online, you get that realism, and you become immersed in the game.

Other Roulette Variations

There are other types of roulette such as mini roulette and other contemporary online roulette versions. This takes the basic rules of American roulette but applies them to an online version of the game that allows the player to attain bonuses throughout. These bonuses are earned for different outcomes. For example, if five reds are spun in a row, the player receives a bonus equivalent to the smallest stake on the table over the five spins mentioned above.

Mobile Roulette

Most casino players play online roulette on their phones so most roulette games are optimised for and accessed through mobile browsers. This means, you can play high-quality roulette games, including live roulette, on your iOS, Android and Windows smartphone or tablet. Some casinos also offer a dedicated mobile app for more features and increased connectivity. So check out our list of mobile casinos, and play online roulette from anywhere, at any time.

How to Play Roulette

While the game of roulette is fairly simple to understand, there are a few variations on bets, and standard rules that you’ll need to understand.

Roulette Rules

Online roulette sites follow the same principle as traditional roulette, with some added features for virtual play. Here are some of the key rules, and an idea of roulette table etiquette, you’ll need to know:

  • Players bet on where a ball will land on a spinning wheel with numbered pockets.
  • The roulette wheel shows black and red numbers from 1 to 36, as well as 0 which is green.
  • Players place their bets before the dealer spins the virtual wheel.
  • The ball is dropped onto the already spinning wheel. Wait for the outcome and hope you’ve predicted correctly!
  • Playing online roulette, the outcomes are determined by a random number generator (RNG).

Roulette Bets

Roulette is a relatively simple game to play, however there are a few bet types you will need to understand before taking your place at the roulette table.

Inside Bets

There are numerous different types of inside bets that players can stake:

  • Straight Up - A bet on a single number. The payoff is 35/1.
  • Split - Player places a bet on two neighbouring squares. The payoff is 17/1.
  • Street - Player places a bet on three neighbouring numbers. The chip must be placed on the outer edge of the row. The payoff is 11/1.
  • Six Line - Allows Player to make two street bets (six neighbouring numbers). The payoff is 5/1.
  • Corner - Player places a bet on four neighbouring squares. The payoff is 8/1.

Outside Bets

There is also an array of outside bets that players can stake:

  • Dozens - Identifiable on the left-hand side of the betting table. These are three squares representing the outcomes from 1 to 12, 13 to 24 and 25 to 36. The payoff is 2/1. It is also called a double bet.
  • Colours - The betting on red or black takes place on the left-hand side of the roulette table. Just look out for the two coloured squares. The payoff is 1/1, and it is an even bet.
  • Odd and Even - This bet is also found on the left-hand side of the table. Players can place a bet on one of the two squares - odd or even. The payoff is 1/1, and it is an even bet.
  • High and Low - Players place a bet on the two squares indicating either 1 to 18 or 19 to 36 and effectively bet on a large group of numbers. The payoff is 1 to 1. It is an even bet.
  • Columns - Players placing a bet on the three squares at the bottom of the betting table are playing 12 numbers at a time. When placing this bet the entire column of numbers above is played. The payoff is, you guessed it, 2/1.

Call Bets

Call Bets are a common bet in European and French versions of the game which allow players to place complex bets on sections of the wheel rather than the roulette table layout. Popular Call Bets include:

Voisins du Zéro: numbers near 0

Tiers du Cylindre: numbers opposite zero

Orphelins: remaining numbers not covered by Voisins or Tiers

To play a call bet, players announce their bet, and chips are placed accordingly

Final Bets

Final Bets are mostly seen in the French variation and involve betting on all numbers that share the same last digit. For example, a Final Bet on “2” would include 2, 12, 22, and 32. While not as common as standard inside or outside bets, Final Bets provide a specialised strategy for players looking to concentrate on specific number groupings.

Announce Bets

Announce bets are similar to call bets but differ in how you can place them. At online roulette sites, an Announce Bet requires the player to declare the bet and ensure they have enough money in their balance before it's officially placed. While both Announce and Call Bets are frequently used in European and French roulette, Announce Bets are more structured, and you will need funds to be available in order to back them up - they’re recommended for experienced roulette players where more complex betting strategies are engaged.

Placing Your Bets

The most common roulette bet is the straight-up, where chips are placed on a specific number. A split bet is on two numbers and is made by placing a chip on the line between them. Similarly, to make a street or trio bet, the player puts their chips on the line at the end of a row of three numbers.

To make a corner bet on four numbers, chips must be placed on the cross where they meet. Then there's the basket bet, where a player selects five numbers by placing chips where either the 0 and 1 or 00 and 3 intersect. You can also bet on six numbers at a time with a double street bet, where the chips sit at the end of the rows and across the horizontal line between the rows.

Players can bet on groups of 12 numbers in one of two ways. The first, a dozens bet, involves placing chips at the side of the board where the numbers are divided into three lots of 12, known as the first 12, second 12 and third 12. The second is a column bet, which is made by placing chips at the bottom of a column.

Roulette Odds/Payouts/RTP

House edge is something most people have heard of, even those who are not interested in casinos. It is a number that highlights how much a game favours the online casino. Essentially, the house edge shows you how the odds and payouts are slightly stacked in the casino’s favour. Individual games, such as online roulette, have a return-to-player (RTP) percentage that shows how often the game pays wins on average.

Looking specifically at roulette online, European Roulette carries an RTP of 2.70%, while American Roulette has a varying RTP depending on the bets you make. For example, if you wager on numbers, the RTP is 5.29%, while a double-zero five number bet carries an RTP of 7.89%

Roulette Strategies

There are several key online roulette strategies, or patterns of betting, that aim to help players manage their bets and potentially improve their chances of success. The most well known three include:

  • Fibonacci Strategy:  This is a progressive betting strategy based on the famous Fibonacci sequence, where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones (e.g., 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8). In this system, players increase their bets following this sequence after a loss and revert to two steps back after a win, aiming to recover losses progressively.
  • Martingale System: Double your bet after each loss, aiming to recover losses with a single win. It can be risky if a losing streak occurs.
  • Reverse Martingale: In contrast to the traditional Martingale system, this sees players increasing bets after a win instead of a loss, capitalising on winning streaks while minimising losses.
  • D'Alembert System: A more conservative approach to betting. The D’Alembert System sees players increasing bets by one unit after a loss and decreasing after a win.

While these strategies offer structure, there is no guarantee of long-term success due to roulette's inherent randomness.

Free Online Roulette vs Real Money Roulette

There are many ways to play free games of roulette -  you do not always have to play online roulette for real money. Casino game developers allow players to access free online roulette games at most casino sites - often in the form of a shortened version of leading titles. Free roulette games are available at many of the recommended sites on this page, listed as 'Demo Mode' or 'Free Play'.

Benefits of Free Roulette and Real Money Roulette

Roulette Casino Security

Security is the first factor we look at when reviewing an online casino. If an online roulette site is not secure, we will not recommend it to you. Every casino we list on our page is fully licensed by the MGA or respective regulatory body. Furthermore, the top casino sites will also work with independent organizations like eCOGRA.

The best online casinos work with regulators to ensure all games are random, meaning players always have a fair chance of winning. In addition, hosting casino games from the top developers is a good sign that a casino is reputable and committed to fair play.

As for your own personal safety when you play roulette online, we recommend having control over your bankroll. For players visiting virtual casinos, the regulatory framework across the industry is working hard to ensure people gamble within their limits.

  • Some payment methods may be supported for deposits but not for withdrawals.
  • There are deposit limits attached to payment methods to ensure customers gamble within their means.

Online Roulette Game Selection

With many Canadian casino platforms focusing heavily on slots, our reviews will verify just which sites excel in other areas, such as table games like roulette and its associated variants - including both free games and real money roulette. Not only do we check the volume of roulette games, the developers supported and the quality of game available are high on the criteria list.

Online Roulette Casino Software Developers

We only recommend top casinos that partner with renowned software providers.

There are many top online roulette and other casino game developers out there, including the following leaders of the pack:

  • Evolution Gaming – What sets Evolution Gaming apart is it works almost exclusively on casino table games, including roulette and blackjack, and live dealer games rather than online slots.
  • NetEnt – While Evolution Gaming does not create online slots, the company purchased NetEnt in 2020. Net Entertainment is a Swedish software developer that is most famous for its online slot games.
  • Playtech – Also one of the veteran online casino software providers, Playtech consistently provides some of the most memorable roulette games.

H3: Playing Roulette on Mobile

With many roulette fans preferring to play on the go, Canada's top-notch roulette casinos provide a mobile playing experience, and sometimes even an app, that’s equal in standards to the desktop version. We will give both a run for their money during our review and report back our findings in detail.

H3: Payment Methods

Our financial experts at Gambling.com assess the payment section of roulette casinos to confirm the available payment methods for deposits and withdrawals as well as fast withdrawal payout options. This should include a range of ewallets like PayPal as well as other digital options, crypto and Visa.

H3: Customer Service

One of the key factors that affects your overall gambling experience is the quality of customer service offered. Our experts assess each site's customer service options, taking into account availability hours of customer care teams, response times, and helpfulness.

H3: Licensing and Compliance

Before playing roulette at any online casino, your safety and security should be a primary consideration.  As such, we only feature operators that are licensed by top casino regulators such as the Malta Gaming Authority.

If the MGA licences a casino, it means that the operator has been vetted and certified. We also look out for additional accreditation, such as Random Number Generator (RNG) certification by external testing houses.
