Aces and Faces is a variant of Jacks or Better, which is itself a variant of traditional five-card-draw poker that gained popularity during the American Civil War. Online video poker sites uses Internet browsers in replace of a computerised console, the likes of which were first seen in casinos during the 1970s.

Aces and Faces, in particular, is unique in that it offers more chances to win than most video poker games as well as provides greater value to full houses and flushes. Players looking to increase their chances of winning will surely love this unique video poker variant.

Variation

The game is similar to the 8/5 variant of Jacks or Better, where a full house pays eight times the initial wager, and a flush pays five times that amount. The main distinction between Aces and Faces and other types of online video poker, however, is that there are more winning hands than usual.

The pay table is extended with the addition of three tiers of four of a kind hands, rather than the traditional one, rewarding four of a kind hands made up of Aces and Faces (as the name suggests) with bigger payouts. This top-heavy reward structure adds excitement to the game, pushing players to take risks where they may not have done otherwise.

Rules

Players are dealt five cards from a standard 52-card deck. They then hold good cards and discard unwanted ones ahead of the draw, where all discarded cards are replaced with new cards from the same pack. The ultimate goal is to be left with the best possible hand after the draw.

Following the main scoring rule of Jacks or Better, anything above a pair of Jacks lands you in the money. The order of hands, from highest to lowest, is as follows:

  1. Royal Flush
  2. Straight Flush
  3. Four of a Kind (Aces)
  4. Four of a Kind (J,Q,K)
  5. Four of a Kind (2-10)
  6. Full House
  7. Flush
  8. Straight
  9. Three of a Kind
  10. Two Pairs
  11. Jacks or Better

Players can choose to focus on one hand at a time, or play multiple hands simultaneously, with a maximum of 100 hands in play at any one time.

Aces or Faces video poker also features a double or nothing option, which can be very lucrative if used wisely. Players have the option to take the money or bet their winnings from that particular hand on cutting the card higher than the dealer. Some providers also allow players to bet half their winnings in the same way.

Strategy

While Aces and Faces has a lot in common with the 8/5 Jacks or Better variant, the top-heavy payout table shifts the strategy of play to one where risk is encouraged. The higher chance of reward by seeking out four of a kind hands pushes players to aim higher.

This said, it's important to remember that while face cards score higher in four of a kind hands, the chance of hitting these is still slim. As with all variants of Draw Poker, a bird in the hand may well be worth two in the bush – if dealt a winning hand, chances are that you'll be better off keeping it than breaking it up in the quest for further riches payout.
