Blue Jays Most Bet On Team in Ontario’s First Year: DraftKings

Among the news items that have come out of the celebration marking the one-year anniversary of the Ontario internet gaming market: The Toronto Blue Jays were the most bet-on sports team, according to DraftKings.

Baseball over Hockey? In Canada?

That's a surprise. That the baseball team was the most wagered in a province where sports fans traditionally have lived and breathed the Toronto Maple Leafs, and where the Toronto Raptors are well-entrenched in the market just four years after an NBA championship.

Still, here are some interesting insights from DraftKings: The Jays were No. 1, followed by the Golden State Warriors, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, then the Raptors. The Warriors and Chiefs are champions, of course.

On the NHL side, the Leafs were No. 1, followed by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche (champions last year) and the Calgary Flames.

The most bet-on NFL teams were the Chiefs, Bills, Cincinnati Bengals, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.

With the Jays No. 1 in the MLB, no surprise that the New York Yankees, LA Dodgers, and Houston Astros were 2-4, followed by the San Diego Padres.

The Warriors and Raptors were No. 1 and 2 on the NBA side, followed by the Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets and LA Clippers.

And in the CFL, it was the Calgary Stampeders No. 1, followed by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, B.C. Lions, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and Toronto Argonauts.

Here Comes the Judge ... For Betting

Aaron Judge was the most bet-on player in a season where he had 62 home runs, breaking Roger Maris’ 61-year-old American League record. Judge was followed by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Jays, Connor McDavid of the Oilers, Brayden Point of the Lightning, and Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

McDavid was the most bet-on NHL player, followed by Point, Auston Matthews of the Leafs, Jack Hughes of the New Jersey Devils, and Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.

And the teams that won the most money for users in Ontario: Chiefs, Ottawa Senators, Milwaukee Bucks, Montreal Canadiens and Sacramento Kings.

On another front, according to iGaming Ontario, the most popular sports to bet on across the industry over the past 12 months was basketball at 28% of betting wagers, followed by soccer at 15%, football at 14%, then hockey and baseball at nine and 8%, respectively.
