NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Winnipeg Jets Predictions, Odds for Jan. 24

Leafs vs Jets Preview

The Winnipeg Jets (30-11-4) are in town to play the Toronto Maple Leafs (23-14-8) in the first of two meetings between the clubs this season. For those following past matchups between the two teams for Canadian sports betting purposes, the Leafs hold an edge: 7-3-0 against Winnipeg in their last ten meetings. Not sure that will matter tonight, though. The two teams will then square off in Winnipeg Saturday night.

Leafs Insights

It’s all about the play of the Core 4 for the Leafs, it seems – Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Mitch Marner, John Tavares. Those four players drive the bus in Toronto, and that’s more and more becoming the problem. Their goaltending has been sketchy of late, their defence porous and old.

The Leafs return home after a four-game road trip, where they went 2-2-0. They have a 10-9-2 record on home ice this season. They beat the Seattle Kraken 3-1 on Sunday night, a game which saw Auston Matthews score his 38th goal, tops in the NHL. D Jake McCabe also had goal Monday; he’s scored in back-to-back games now. G Joseph Woll is still out with a high ankle sprain, but he’s back practicing.

Jets Insights

The Jets are a league powerhouse, and who would have predicted that going into the NHL season? They’re first in the Central Division, and just four points back of the Vancouver Canucks for first in the Western Conference. Perhaps the big story has been the exemplary play of G Connor Hellebuyck – 23-8-3, two shutouts, a 2.17 GAA, .925 SV%, fully worthy of that $7.5 million annual salary. C Mark Scheifele, the team leader with 41 points, has been out with a lower body injury. ESPN says he will be a game-time decision tonight in Toronto.

The Jets are coming off a 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins Monday night.

🏒 Bet on Leafs vs. Jets at DraftKings 🏒

For those of you focused on NHL betting, the stat we are focused on is the Jets power play: 16.3 per cent, 23rd in the NHL. That’s a surprise, considering their record. The good news for the Jets is the Leafs’ penalty killing per centage is 76.4 per cent, sixth worst in the league, right down there with the Montreal Canadiens and San Jose Sharks of the world. Plus, the Leafs are starting Ilya Samsonov in goal tonight, and we’re not ready to proclaim him as all the way back from the confidence issues he has struggled with all season. Take the Jets Moneyline, especially if Scheifele plays.
