Three Emerging NFL Quarterbacks To Watch
Trevor Lawrence is 16.00 to win MVP at PointsBet Canada
Justin Fields is 16.00 to win MVP at BetMGM Sportsbook
Although big-name quarterbacks like Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes receive a lot of attention, bettors can find value in some of the newer names at that position.
Top 3 QBs To Keep An Eye On
Here are three quarterback poised for breakout seasons:
Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars
Lawrence really emerged last season – 66.3% completion percentage, 4,113 yards and 25 TDs. He was named to the Pro Bowl. He’s on this list because this is just his third season. Odds are 16.00 at PointsBet Canada that he wins the league MVP. So oddsmakers are calling for a higher ceiling in Lawrence’s case.
This presents oppostunities for those looking for intriguing NFL prop bets.
The Jaguars’ offensive line remains an impediment. Lawrence runs a lot – 62 carries, 291 yards, 4.7-yard average last season, 10th among NFL QBs. That’s worrisome from a longevity perspective, but right now he's on a path to success.
Justin Fields, Chicago Bears
Elite runner, but only an OK passer?
That’s the knock. Fields’ stats last season tell the tale – just 318 passing attempts but 1,143 rushing yards. By comparison, Tom Brady had 733 passing attempts in 2022, and no quarterback other than Fields rushed for more than 765 yards.
In an effort to even out those number, the Bears have made improvements to the receiving corps, led by D.J. Moore. The team also has beefed up the offensive line, drafting 6-foot-6, 333-pound Darnell Wright out of Tennessee and signing 6-foot-3, 316-pound Nate Davis in free agency. Plus offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is regarded as an up-and-comer.
These things point to improved passing stats for Fields.
At BetMGM Sportsbook, MVP futures for Fields point to success, as well. Right now Fields is at 16.00, shorter than Dallas’ Dak Prescott (21.00), and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa (21.00).
Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh Steelers
Chosen in the first round by Pittsburgh in the 2020 draft, Pickett made 12 starts last season, completing 63% of his passes, good for 2,404 yards and seven touchdowns.
He looked great in preseason — granted, it was preseason, with soft defences. But he still looked decisive.
In October last season, Pickett had eight interceptions. After that? Just one. And with a solid defence in Pittsburgh led by T.J. Watt, all Pickett needs to do is relax and ascend.
The Steelers are a running team first, led by Najee Harris (272 rushes, 1,034 yard and seven TDs in 2022, down from 1,200 yards in 2021), but Pickett also is a good runner (70 runs, 375 yards, 4 TDs in 2022).
Check out his rushing splits last season – 98 and 97 yards through October and November, and three TDs, then a concussion and 39 yards, and just 3.3 yards per carry, in December.
He’ll want to establish himself more as a passer this season. Pickett isn’t a star yet, but he has time to get there.
For fans and for those interested in NFL betting, these three quarterbacks deserve a close look this season and into the future.
