Upcoming Canucks vs. Leafs

It’s one of the early season surprises across the NHL, the way each team has played to date. The Canucks have been one of the NHL’s top teams. Not a lot of people predicted that going into the season. The Canucks currently sit second in the NHL’s Western Conference, at 9-2-1, four points behind the Vegas Golden Knights. Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes, J.T. Miller, Brock Boeser rank among league leaders in points. Pettersson leads the NHL with 24 points. Vancouver is coming off a 5-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.

The Leafs, on the other hand, while seeing a mercurial performance from Auston Matthews out of the gate (13 goals in 14 games, including two hat tricks), have been abysmal defensively, fifth worst in the NHL in goals allowed per game (3.64). It was the Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes listed as Stanley Cup favourites going into the season.

Last night they were hosting the Calgary Flames – blowing a 4-1 lead while scraping out a 5-4 shootout win. The goalie they thought would lead the way this season, Ilya Samsonov, has played himself out of the No. 1 spot, replaced by Joseph Woll (5-4-0, 2.91 GAA and a .908 save percentage). Combined, Leafs goaltenders are fifth worst in the NHL in goals against average (3.64), with a ninth worst save percentage, at .889.

Prediction #1 - Outcome: Canucks 2.02

Our money is on the Canucks to win, because of their firepower up front. They’re tops in the NHL averaging 4.50 goals per game. Never mind that the Leafs are the home team – that didn’t help them when they coughed up three third period goals Wednesday night in their 6-3 loss at home to the Ottawa Senators, then blowing that 4-1 lead last night. Plus Samsonov is likely the starting goalie for the Leafs tonight – and it’s been an adventure for him in the crease all season so far (2-1-2, 4.11 GAA, .855 save percentage). The Canucks have totally bought into the coaching of Rick Tocchet, who took over midway through last season.

Prediction #2 - Over/Under: 6.5 (O: 1.76, U: 2.14)

According to Pinnacle: O/U 6.5. Matthews didn’t score last night, the Leafs’ third line of Max Domi, Nick Robertson and Calle Jarnkrok has produced of late (ten points in three games), the Canucks’ offence, and the state of the Leafs’ defence and goaltending - all point to the Over.

Prediction #3 - Prop Bets: Domi, over 0.5 assists

Go with Domi, over 0.5 assists (3.58 at Pinnacle). He’s found a comfort zone since being moved back to centre on the third line, and that nifty shootout goal last night gave him a confidence boost (he’s yet to score in regulation time this season so far).
