We’re on the eve of the NHL’s off-season crazy time, with the draft coming up tonight in Nashville, followed by the kickoff off to free agency on July 1. 

A Canadian team hasn’t won the Stanley Cup since 1993 (the Montreal Canadiens), something that Canadian hockey fans want corrected. 

Let’s take a look at what the Canadian teams need to do to turn the tide on that and bring a Cup back to Canadian soil. Here we look at sports betting updates around the Calgary Flames.

Unrest Around The Calgary Flames

New general manager Craig Conroy just made his first trade, sending RW Tyler Toffoli to the New Jersey Devils, with C Yegor Sharangovich and a third-round pick in tonight’s draft coming back to Calgary. 

Sharangovich then signed a two-year $6.2 million contract with Calgary, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. So a tidy bit of business on a forward some think is a Top 6, potentially speaking, and had 13 goals, and 30 points with the Devils last season.

The story has been one of unrest in Calgary, first with the firing of GM Brad Treliving, then coach Darryl Sutter was fired, then the hiring of Conroy, and then players like Toffoli requesting trades. 

With Toffoli Gone, Who’s Next To Go?

The Flames are tight against the salary cap — $2.4 million in space, according to CapFriendly — for a team that last season finished 38-27-17, for 93 points, missing the playoffs by two points. 

It’s a bit of a mystery as to why some sportsbooks have set the odds where they are.

Toffoli was a big loss if the Flames have serious Cup aspirations, coming off a career year where he scored 34 goals, with 73 points, and was a +16. 

There have also been rumblings that C Elias Lindholm and his $4.85 million salary might be on the move. D Noah Hanifin at $4.95 million reportedly wants to move to a U.S. team.

Still, Toffoli was entering the last year of his contract, at age 32, and would have been looking at a bump in money. Conroy has one eye on the salary cap with this trade, but he also weakened a roster that missed the playoffs.

The Flames are going to need to see lot more out of LW Jonathan Huberdeau, their top salary player at $10.5 million per year, who delivered just 15 goals and 55 points last year (after a 115-point season with the Florida Panthers the previous year). C Nazem Kadri, at $7 million per season, was OK, with 24 goals and 56 points, but they’ll need more out of him as well. 

The Fourth Period reported the Flames are interested in Florida Panthers F Anthony Duclair, which would put them back in the conversation for a playoff berth in the Western Conference. 

However, a lot of negative things are going to have to happen to teams ahead of the Flames — the Colorado Avalanche (who have lost Gabriel Landeskog for the entire 2023-24 season), Edmonton Oilers, defending champion Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, and others — for the Flames to have any serious Stanley Cup shot.
