How Far Can We See Canada Getting in the Women's World Cup?
Canada is the 10th favorite to win the 2023 Women's World Cup out of the 32 countries taking part. However, sports betting oddsof getting out of the group stages against Australia, Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland are good. Canada opens against Nigeria July 20 at 10 p.m. ET.
Australia is the favorite to win Group B (1.54), as Canada sits at 3.00 to finish top of that group. Ireland is 20.00, while Nigeria is 36.00, so it's no surprise to see Canada at 1.23 to qualify out of Group B. Australia is also the fifth favorite to win the tournament, so unless Canada beats it, we don’t see how it finishes top of Group B.
The excellent players for Australia like Sam Kerr mean it will likely conquer this group, so Canada is expected to finish second. Should it do so, it will meet with the winner of Group D in the knockout rounds, which is expected to be England, which is 1.25 to win Group D.
Against England, Canada will be a huge underdog. England won the European Championship last year and is only behind the United States in the outright winner odd list. With this in mind, Canada likely exits the competition at the round of 16, because England will be too strong.
Should Canada win Group B, it will likely face off with Denmark. It should win that round of 16 game, but finishing ahead of Australia is, first and foremost, a big ask.
What Players Could Shine for Canada at the Women's World Cup?
As a 14-time winner of the Canada Soccer Player of the Year, Christine Sinclair is the all-time leader for international goals scored for men or women with 190 goals, and is one of the most-capped active international soccer players with a total of 323 caps ahead of the World Cup. She has the best soccer betting odds to win the Golden Boot.
At 40 years old, she might not be the star of the show for Canada, but as the top goal scorer on the international scene, she will always be one to watch.
Canada also boasts of a lot of talent from the English Women's Super League, such as Adriana Leon of Manchester United, Jessie Fleming of Chelsea, Shelina Zadorsky of Tottenham Hotspur, and two more Chelsea stars, Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence.
Zadorsky, Buchanan and Lawrence will make up one of the best defensive setups at this World Cup, which will give Canadians great hope in conceding very few goals.
Fleming continues to be one of Chelsea's and the Women's Super League's best players, and she was integral in helping Chelsea win the league title and FA Cup this season. She will no doubt be the one to watch for Canada at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, and if Canada is to get far in this competition, she will have to be at her very best and likely score a few goals, too.
