2021 Frisco Bowl Betting
College football bowl season is upon us, and most people that hear about the Frisco Bowl probably assume that it is held in San Francisco. Actually, locals that live in the Bay Area do not like the term and they don’t use it. This bowl game is held at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas in December, so you still have time to get in on the betting action with the best betting sites in Canada.
There is always a Conference USA team in this bowl, and the University of Texas-San Antonio will bring a Conference USA Championship and a 12-1 record into the game.
They will face a formidable foe in San Diego State. They cruised through their Mountain West schedule and finished the regular season 11-1, but they were crushed 46-13 by Utah State in the Conference Championship game.
SDS played a tougher schedule, but they are interlopers in the Lone Star State, and the Roadrunners will be playing on friendly turf just five hours away from their campus. The Aztecs probably feel a bit deflated about playing in a minor bowl game, and this is another equalizer.

Betting on San Diego State at the Frisco Bowl
SDSU head coach Brady Hoke has done an outstanding job emphasizing the team’s strengths and masking its weaknesses. The Aztecs are not a good passing team, and the QB situation has been unstable.
In spite of these weaknesses, bowl eligibility was a given, but they were not contenders for a spot in the college football playoff.
Jordan Brookshire started the Aztecs’ last game against Utah State, and he was relieved by Jalen Mayden after completing 11 of 23 passes for just 117 yards. Mayden played well, completing five of six passes for 50 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for 36 yards on four carries.
The 46-point collapse in the MWC Championship game was an outlier. Their defence has been solid behind Bednarik Award finalist and NFL prospect Cameron Thomas. They are also strong on special teams with kicker Matt Araiza, and they have run the ball well at times.
They have covered the spread once in their last six games, but a bowl win in this spot is not out of the question.
Betting on UTSA at the Frisco Bowl
Head coach Jeff Traylor has done a great job at UTSA, and senior quarterback Frank Harris has been an outstanding field general. As a junior, Harris broke the school record for QB passing accuracy, completing 63.6% of his aerial attempts.
In 2021, he broke his own record by connecting on 66.4% of his attempts with 25 touchdown passes and five interceptions. This equates to a gaudy 153.6 quarterback rating, and he ran for 15 touchdowns over the last two years, registering over five yards a carry.
This team was 8-0 before they lost to the University of North Texas 45-23 as definitive 31-point favourites. They turned the tables when they beat a very good Western Kentucky squad in their season finale by a score of 49-41 as 11.5-point underdogs.
2021 Frisco Bowl Odds
All the top Canadian online sportsbooks posted odds for the Frisco Bowl shortly after the matchup was announced on December 5. You can bet on the game at William Hill Sportsbook, 888sport, BetVictor and a number of other sites.
The Roadrunners are coming into the game on a positive note, and as we have suggested, they will be content because they would never be considered for the major bowl games.
The Aztecs are not riding a wave of momentum in the same manner. Simply put, they were humiliated by Utah State, and they have question marks at quarterback. UTSA is playing close to home, and all of these factors have made the Roadrunners the favourite.
Frisco Bowl Moneyline Odds
For those who may not be thoroughly familiar with sports betting, a moneyline wager is a bet on a team to win the game outright without any point spread. You should visit all of the legal sportsbooks in your province to make sure you are getting the most favourable odds.
Frisco Bowl Point Spread Odds
You get or give extra points when you make a point spread bet. Most of the Canadian sportsbooks have made UTSA a 3-point favourite, but you may be able to find -2.5.
This is a very important number because field goals are worth three points, and lot of games will land on three points exactly. If you are betting the underdog, it is disconcerting to be receiving 2.5 points, and vice versa.
Frisco Bowl Over/Under Odds
Online sportsbooks post an estimate of the number of points that will be scored in the game. You can bet the over or the other, and this is called a totals bet.
Five of the last six UTSA games played have gone over the total, but the last seven Aztecs games after a double-digit loss at home have gone under. Those past performances are conflicting, and overall, three of the last five SDS games have gone under. This is a crap shoot in our estimation.
Frisco Bowl Prop Bets
A proposition bet is a wager on a certain outcome within a game. For example, one of the propositions is a wager on the first team to score 20 points. The legal Canadian sports betting sites also offer same game proposition parlays, and you can choose your own total or point spread.
When you make proposition bets in addition to a wager on the game itself, you have multilayered action. If you watch the game, it is a more exciting form of entertainment, and you can sometimes win a prop bet during the game and alleviate your exposure to risk.
Frisco Bowl Past Results
The Frisco Bowl is a relatively new addition to the postseason scene. This upcoming 2021 edition is going to be the fourth installment. These are the results of the first three games:
Year | Winner (score) | Runner Up (score) |
---|---|---|
2017: | Louisiana Tech 51 | SMU 10 |
2018: | Ohio 27 | San Diego State 0 |
2019: | Kent State 51 | Utah State 41 |
2020: | Canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic | N/A |
Who Won the Most Frisco Bowls?
As you can see from the previous section, there have been no repeat winners going into the 2021 game.
Frisco Bowl Betting Tips
Motivation is the most important factor to consider when you are handicapping bowl games. We have touched upon the fact that the Aztecs may feel like they are settling for a minor bowl when they had more lofty ambitions.
There is no room for this type of thinking if you want to win a football game. This gives the Roadrunners somewhat of an edge from the outset, but of course, they are laying three points.

Momentum
UTSA is coming off an exciting victory over a strong opponent as 3.5-point underdogs. They have to be feeling good about themselves coming into this contest, and Utah State will be trying to regroup after a crushing defeat. This will be the last college game for Frank Harris, so he will be supremely motivated.
Common Opponent
You can sometimes get some insight by comparing performances against a common opponent. Both of these teams played UNLV, and San Diego State beat them 28-20 in Vegas. UTSA bested the Rebels by a 24-17 score at UTSA in early October.
Avoid Parlays
Picking the winners of games is only one-half of the equation. You also have to bet wisely, and with this in mind, you should avoid side and total parlays. If you like a side and you have a strong opinion of the total, make two separate straight bets.
Yes, you get more bang for your buck if you hit a parlay, but you can be right on one bet and lose all the money that you put out. If you make two straight bets, you will only lose the vigorish if you are 1-1, and the savings add up over a large sample size.
