2024 Open Championship: The Panel’s Tips And Predictions For Royal Troon

2024 Open Championship Betting Predictions:

The final major of the year is upon us with the 2024 Open Championship getting under way on Thursday, July 18, at Royal Troon Golf Club - the ninth time the venue has hosted golf's oldest tournament.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is the favourite with betting sites while other top contenders in the Open Championship field include Rory McIlroy (13/2), Bryson DeChambeau (11/1), Xander Schauffele (14/1) and Ludvig Aberg (14/1).

Rory McIlroy will be keen to bounce back as he looks to secure his first major in a decade having narrowly missed out on the US Open last month, bogeying three of his final four holes at Pinehurst No. 2 in a stunning major collapse to hand the trophy to DeChambeau.

Our golf experts on The Panel have put their heads together to discuss the merits of the world’s best players and picked out three Open Championship betting tips for what should be a thrilling four days on the west coast of Ayrshire.

Scheffler The Man To Beat

After another fabulous season, Scottie Scheffler will be looking to add another title to his ever-growing haul and is 9/2 favourite with golf betting sites to win the 2024 Open.

If he were to do so, the man who ended up behind bars just hours before the US Open in May, would finally record his first victory on foreign soil with all of his 15 professional wins to date coming in North America.

Already guaranteed to top the FedEx Cup playoffs leaderboard, Scheffler has secured six wins and two second-place finishes in last 10 starts.

However, he did finish outside the top two at two recent majors, coming eighth at the PGA Championship and 41st at the US Open.

Another slight concern is that The Open remains the only major where he hasn’t achieved a top-five finish, with his best showing eighth place back in 2021.

But since then, Scheffler’s form has gone to another level, leading the PGA Tour in metrics such as SG: total, SG: Tee-to-Green, SG: Approach, GIR percentage and putting average.

In his three Open Championship appearances, he has consistently shot par or better in three rounds at each tournament, so if he can find a little more consistency, few would bet against him securing major number three at Royal Troon.

Schauffele Can Land Claret Jug

Xander Schauffele has demonstrated consistent excellence in major tournaments, highlighted by his recent victory at the 2024 PGA Championship, where he set a record for the lowest score to par in major history with a 21-under total.

This breakthrough win has solidified his reputation as a formidable contender in high-stakes events and means he heads to Royal Troon as one of the genuine contenders to lift the Claret Jug.

Schauffele’s performances in past Open Championships only strengthen his case as he has made the cut in all six of his appearances, including a notable second-place finish at Carnoustie in 2018.

His ability to navigate challenging links courses is evident from top-20 finishes at Royal Birkdale, St Andrews and Hoylake.

Meanwhile, his victory at the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open demonstrates how adept he is at playing in conditions similar to those at Troon.

With 11 top-10 finishes in 26 major appearances and an impressive streak of not finishing below 18th in his last seven majors, Schauffele can’t be ignored and certainly possesses the game and the temperament to triumph in Scotland.

Time For Collin To Come Good Once More

Collin Morikawa, currently 18/1 with betting apps, is well positioned to make a strong challenge for the 2024 Open Championship.

The 27-year-old American has already achieved six PGA Tour victories, including two major championships: the 2020 PGA Championship and the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St George's.

Despite missing the cut in his last two Open appearances, Morikawa is in excellent form heading into the oldest major.

He has finished T16 or better in each of his last eight PGA Tour starts, rising to number six in the Official World Golf Ranking.

His recent performances include a T3 finish at the Masters, T4 at the PGA Championship and T14 at the US Open.

His putting, often considered a weak point, showed significant improvement with a standout performance at the US Open, where he gained 4.84 strokes on the field in a bogey-free round and he has to be considered a serious contender here and replicate his success of three years ago.
