Cameron Smith Masters Odds: Can any Australian player win at Augusta National?

It has been 10 years since we’ve had an Australian champion at Augusta National, with Adam Scott landing a play-off success in 2013 after beating Angel Cabrera.

However, perhaps we will see a man from Down Under wearing the Green Jacket on Sunday, April 9, with Cameron Smith among the favourites in the US Masters betting to secure a victory.

The LIV player broke his major duck at St Andrews last July when winning the Open Championship after keeping things steady in the final round to stave off the threat of Rory McIlroy.

The 29-year-old was one of many high-profile golfers who joined the LIV Tour, although that doesn’t exclude him from competing in the majors and he has previously demonstrated that he has the game to perform well at this unique course.

Smith will return to Georgia off the back of three consecutive top 10 finishes in the Masters, with the Aussie having been bang in contention going into the final round in 2022, although a disappointing 73 meant he had to settle for a share of third place with Shane Lowry.

Even so, he was able to card a 68 in the first and third round at Augusta and that came after tying for 10th place in the previous year.

In 2020, Smith actually carded four consecutive sub-70 scores throughout the event, although he was no match for Dustin Johnson who was able to handle the autumn scoring conditions best of all.

Smith broke his duck on the LIV Golf Tour when claiming a success in the LIV Golf Invitational Chicago, with this victory coming in September.

In November, there was a victory in the Australian PGA Championship, although a success at Augusta National would certainly be a divisive one in the golfing world.

After all, this was the highest-ranked PGA player to defect to the LIV Tour and this is the first major in which Smith and others will be competing in since the decision was made to ban them from playing any PGA Tour events.

As for former champion Adam Scott, he is still afforded plenty of respect by betting sites and this is a player who has made the cut on an incredible 13 consecutive occasions.

He’s been outside the top 20 in the previous three renewals and his last PGA Tour win came in 2020 when landing the Genesis Invitational. However, this is a former champion who knows what is required to win here.

Jason to finally have his Day in the sun at Augusta?

Some golf betting sites actually make Jason Day a more likely winner than Cameron Smith, with the 35-year-old bidding to double his major tally when it comes to the 2023 Masters.

The Queenslander is still sitting on that solitary success which was achieved when securing the 2015 PGA Championship, although he appears to be in good nick right now.

Day qualifies for the 2023 Masters by virtue of a top 50 place in the Official World Golf Rankings, with the player having demonstrated some solid form to reach the quarter final stage of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play recently, before eventually being defeated by Scottie Scheffler.

This player has made enormous strides in the past few months considering he started 2023 in 112th position as far as the OWGR was concerned.

However, there have been no less than five top-10 finishes and Day will be determined to make amends after being sidelined for the 2022 Masters tournament.

Indeed, injury has been a persistent problem throughout his career and Day had an operation on his right hip last spring.

While this player has failed to make the cut in his past two appearances in the first major of the year, although historically he has shown an ability to operate well at Augusta.

He was tied fifth in the 2019 tournament and will hope to rediscover some of that magic after finding some serious form of late.

Lee can build on promising Masters debut

Min Woo Lee is another Australian player lining up to compete in the first major of 2023 and the 24-year-old is fresh from finishing tied-sixth in the Players’ Championship, with further improvement to come from someone who enjoyed a breakthrough 2022.

Considering it was his first appearance at Augusta 12 months ago, a tied-14th placing suggests that the future looks bright for someone who only went professional in 2019. Exchange betting sites are offering 80/1 about him, which makes plenty of appeal to each-way punters.
