13:40 Southwell – Lynns Boy – 1pt @ 12/1
Lynns Boy hasn’t done anything of note since joining up with John Butler’s yard but he is being given a chance by the handicapper and has dropped 4lbs for a course run over 6f last time. He seemed to be a non-stayer and wasn’t given any sort of hard time in the final furlong when it became obvious he had no chance.
I backed him on his penultimate start when he raced over C&D off 6lbs higher and he was readily outpaced there before threatening to run on late, at which point he didn’t have a clear run. That was a tougher contest and it’s worth noting that his sole win came at this 0-65 level over C&D last March, in which he made all and bolted up.
Callum Shepard is a better jockey booking and if he can help the horse to find a good early rhythm somewhere near the speed, we could get the chance to see an improved performance. The yard continue to be in good form and if any money goes down, my confidence would go up. But for now, 10/1+ is too big.

14:10 Southwell – Another Angel – 1pt @ 5/1
Another Angel is well into cliff horse territory with many punters, including myself! It’s two-and-a-half years since he was last successful and as a 9-year-old, not many more victories await. However, recent signs have been on the positive side of things and he was heavily supported in the betting for a C&D handicap last week, eventually going off as the 4/1 favourite having been double-figures.
Things didn’t pan out there as he missed a beat at the start and ended up being forced into a more reserved racing position compared to what suits him best. He ran fine given the circumstances and hopefully could make up for that by doing the business now, something I think has a very good chance of happening if he’s making the running or at least close to the speed.
One thing that should prove to be a major help is dropping into a 0-50 classified stakes for the first time as he tackles plenty of rivals who also struggle to win. He should be able to maintain his gallop for longer against this calibre of opposition and if all goes to plan at the stalls, he’ll be hard to catch. 9/2-5/1 is fine.
16:55 Southwell – Desert Boots – 1pt @ 8/1
Desert Boots caught the eye over 6f at Lingfield last time out and with an extra furlong to race over, he could do even better. He was typically slow to stride and had a mountain of work on when sitting well back in the field early in the straight, but powered home under very considerate handling from his rider to grab third behind all-the-way winner Bezzas Lad.
With a stronger pace or a faster break, he could have been bang in the mix and from a 1lb lower mark, it’s not going to take much improvement to see him go close at this level. The surface here is an unknown, but he did win at the track when it was fibresand and if tapeta isn’t a problem, there’s enough in place to suggest a bigger effort is on the cards. I think he'll win again soon, hopefully today.
17:25 Southwell – Thaki – 1pt @ 14/1
Thaki seemed to be edging back towards his best form at Newcastle last time and looks overpriced at 14/1 to step up again. A truly run race played to his strengths on that occasion as he was given the chance to make up ground from the rear of the field but I thought he made his inroads plenty early enough, hence why he weakened in the last half-furlong and couldn't put up a better fight.
This being a turning 6f might lead to the rider holding onto him for longer and although it’s going to be less of a stamina test, the pace forecast is predicted to be strong enough that he should get a good pull into the equation. He’s on the same mark as when successful last May and with another jump forward possible on what is just his third start after a break, double figures look too big.
