14:10 Catterick – Captain Corcoran – 1pt @ 9/1

Captain Corcoran was one of my selections when he ran at Thirsk last week and given that he’s almost always a prominent racer, it was mildly depressing to see him restrained leaving the stalls. I had a fair idea he wouldn’t be winning within about a second of the race starting and how well he performed after to run on into fourth place was very encouraging given the tactics and his lack of a recent run.

I would guess that connections had their eye on another day, not a surprise with his previous record when fresh being so poor, and hopefully this might be it. He loves softer ground, runs speed tracks well (has a C&D success on the slate) and the yard actually won this race last season. A repeat trick could be on the cards if this fellow can get into the lead, or at least sit a lot closer than he did at Thirsk.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

16:18 Catterick – Magical Effect – 1pt @ 11/1

Magical Effect may or may not be fit enough to do himself justice, it’s hard to know, but Ruth Carr’s horses are going along as well as they have done in a few years (23-122 since October) and I doubt that Ben Curtis is being booked for a fun spin around. He has only ever had four rides for the yard and is very good around this track, one that provides a fairly unique test that not all horses are keen on.

The selection has no problem here, bolting up on heavy ground over C&D last September, and showed it was no fluke in scoring again at Pontefract five weeks later. He can be ridden any way at all but there’s going to be a crazy pace on here which could pull him into things from a more reserved sit and I think he’ll enjoy how it pans out. It comes down to whether he’s fit enough but 11/1 is worth the risk.

17:20 Catterick – Midnight Flame – 1pt @ 6/1

Midnight Flame looked promising on debut last year, running a nice race in a Goodwood maiden to finish fourth, beaten just a few lengths under a hands-and-heels ride. The winner of that is rated 91 now, the third placed in the Albany and a few of the others won after as well. Unfortunately, so far, that has been the peak for Midnight Flame but she should be able to do better handicapping as a 3-year-old.

She moved to John Quinn’s yard prior to her final juvenile run and went reasonably well for a long way on heavy ground at Doncaster. I’m not sure the draw helped her cause and she was rather “winged” on the side of the field, something I hate in sprints. It has led to another 3lb drop in the weights and although again we have no idea with regard to fitness, this looks like the right sort of race for her to go well in.
