14:10 Newcastle – Selfish Brian – 1pt @ 12/1

Selfish Brian had been shaping well in November and December after joining Nigel Tinkler’s yard, then looked to have lost his way with a couple of below-par efforts in January. Following six weeks off, he returned to form with a promising third to the clearly well-handicapped Bristol Hill over C&D, making his way to the front a couple of furlongs out before failing to finish off as strongly as had looked likely.

He never got near the lead next time at Southwell (Bristol Hill second under a penalty) but that was a farce of a race, with the winner setting a crawl of a gallop and proving impossible to catch. That form is worthless and based on what he did previously, he’d have a big chance. Amourie was three-lengths behind then and he’s 4/1 in this. Selfish Brian isn’t a 12/1 shot if bringing his true level to the table.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

15:55 Newcastle – Abnaa – 1pt @ 28/1

Abnaa was one of my selections last week and in fairness, I did say he’d be all or nothing! It was nothing on that occasion, as he finished in last place, but he’s best when held up and raced closer to the speed than usual. That wasn’t a tactical error or anything, it was more so a result of circumstance as they went slow and he didn’t have the speed to cope when it lifted, finishing five-lengths behind Ron O.

The main reason I’m willing to take a chance again (alongside the price) is the step up to a mile. He hasn’t raced over it all that often in the past year but does stay this far and hit the line hard for each of his three wins in the opening six weeks of the year. He’s only 1lb higher than his last success and if this panned out to suit, he could go well. The risk is in whether he has lost his form; it’s possible he has, but I'll still play.

17:40 Newcastle – Tathmeen – 1pt @ 7/1

This is a tight handicap, just 4lbs separating the top ten, but Tathmeen could be the answer if the splits come for him. He ran the best race of his season last time when second to Rhythm and although he could never catch Ruth Carr’s filly, he beat the remainder comfortably. The way he races always requires luck in the run but he has a good draw in ten and must be a big player if replicating the figure posted last week. 13/2 or bigger is worth having a go at and I do fancy his chances.
