14:25 Newmarket – Final Watch – 1pt @ 17/2

Final Watch ended last season on a low note, with two poor performances on testing ground. However, track position didn’t help him on either occasion and he’s definitely better than they would suggest, as shown when bolting up at Ascot in September. The way he went through that race before asserting late on was impressive and a 3lb higher mark looks far from insurmountable if all is well.

We haven’t got to see him since so it’s tough to know where his fitness is at, but Andrea Atzeni is booked for only his second ever ride with the yard (the other finished second) and hopefully that, along with the fact they’re running in a valuable race at Newmarket, is a signal of intent. The ground won’t be a problem, he’s a C&D winner and there’s more to come this season as a 5-year-old.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

15:00 Newmarket – Toshizou – 1pt e/w @ 20/1

Toshizou hasn’t been with Roger Fell for long and shaped reasonably in the Lincoln on debut for the yard. He never landed any sort of meaningful blow but travelled well enough on ground that would have been too testing for him and he didn’t get the clearest of passages through either. It was his first run since October so you’d have to hope he’ll improve fitness-wise and be sharper for having had the spin.

With just three runs since August 2021, it’s safe to assume he hasn’t been the easiest to train, but he had a few really good performances in Ireland, including both starts last year. His mark of 93 looks workable for when he’s at his peak and it’s interesting to see Jonny Peate hop off Harswell Duke to remove his 5lb claim from this fellow instead. This is competitive but if he steps forward, he can go well.

17:20 Newmarket – Texas Man – 1pt @ 20/1

Texas Man will likely be all-or-nothing for a yard who usually wind their horses up to peak in the middle of the season. Indeed, it was last June when this fellow won his only race of the year and on that occasion he got the better of the now 108-rated Silky Wilkie despite conceding a pound. Their careers have gone in opposite directions since but there was hope on show at Southwell last time.

Having been awkward to stride, Texas Man had to settle for a sit out the back on a surface he isn’t proven on, but kept going to the line under tender handling. He showed enough to suggest there could be a step forward soon and he’ll appreciate the return to turf. Both juvenile wins came on softer ground and if he gets a sit on the speed this time, he could be hard to pass despite his big price.
