13:40 Ripon – Dogged – 1pt @ 20/1

Dogged has a poor record but I don’t think it’s attitude related and despite being a couple of pounds out of the handicap, he’s running off a career-low mark and should find a race at some point. His reappearance run at Newcastle was a write-off as he reared as the stalls opened, missed the break and was then anchored at the back in a contest where they went slow, those up top not stopping.

He wasn’t given anything like a hard time and it was his first start for six months, so the likelihood is that it was needed anyway. His All-Weather abilities are questionable also and he’ll prefer getting back onto turf, with one of his best efforts for this yard coming on soft ground at Pontefract this time last year. If he breaks better and can get near the lead, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go a lot better.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

13:50 Newmarket – Kerdos – 2pts @ 7/2

Kerdos is one to follow this season and should be up to winning a nice race or two, ideally starting with this. He has already shown a good level on all three of his career starts, winning both of his juvenile runs in maiden/novice company before finishing a head behind Conquistador on handicap debut at Lingfield four weeks ago. He looked to have the race won there, then got chinned late on.

Maybe it was fitness, maybe it was the sharp nature of the track catching him out, but he enhanced his reputation and proved he has trained on. Returning to turf will be a plus-point and any ease left in the ground will not hinder his chances. He’s up a couple of pounds to 92 but that looks within his range and there’s likely to be more improvement in the locker anyway. If all goes to plan, he’ll go close.

15:20 Ripon – Burj Malinka – 1pt @ 12/1

Burj Malinka made a really pleasing reappearance at Doncaster (5f) earlier this month, finishing third behind Little Muddy. That form has had a boost since with the runner-up, Spoof, unlucky not to score at Yarmouth. The selection showed improved form in cheekpieces last term as well and they weren’t in use for his comeback run, so it’s possible that he was expected to take a step forward for the spin.

A more interesting angle is the step up in trip to 6f on a speed track. Both wins have been over a stiff 5f but he does stay as far as 7f and today’s test might be the perfect inbetween, especially on a softer surface. There are some pace rivals in opposition but he doesn’t have to lead, or even race prominently, to show his best. But I’m hoping he’ll be near the speed and grind out a victory.

17:15 Newmarket – Chartwell House – 1pt e/w @ 28/1

Chartwell House slips under the radar here thanks to his last couple of runs as a juvenile being below-par but it wouldn’t take a major revival to put him on the right track again. There are some changes at play, as he has been gelded since last seen and the visor worn for the first time at Goodwood has been removed, which will be a help as he definitely didn’t appreciate racing in it on that occasion.

Some of his form between June and August makes his mark of 82 look workable, and he is the type to appreciate being ridden a bit colder in a big field. Neil Callan rides – his only mount on the card – and if there’s anyone who can get the maximum out of a tricky enough type, it’s him. Where his fitness will be at is an unknown but he’s one I’ll be following for a while and the price accounts for the risk.
