13:30 Lingfield – Vega Sicilia – 1pt @ 5/1

Vega Sicilia is yet to race in a proper handicap where they don’t crawl around before sprinting for home and if he gets a true pace here, we could see an improved performance. All of his AW handicap runs to date have yielded second placed finishes, the first two behind subsequent winners, and I think he has been learning nicely on the job. First-time cheekpieces could help his case further and an in-form, promising apprentice has been booked. With luck in the run, I suspect they’ll prove tough to beat on a track we know he can run up to his best at.

14:40 Lingfield – On A Session – 1pt @ 16/1

On A Session doesn’t win often but I think it’s because he’s usually handicapped to the hilt. The assessors are giving him a chance now as his three runs following a break have led to a 6lb drop and if you watch his last two in particular, his rider was never too vigorous with him, for all that neither race panned out to suit anyway. He finished second in this contest last year off 3lbs higher and those outings over 7f will have sharpened him up. This is likely to have been his target and he’s a big price.

15:15 Lingfield – Aberama Gold – 1pt @ 12/1

With Lequinto now a non-runner, Aberama Gold will get the nod. He’s a bigger price than he should be thanks to his below-par performance at Wolverhampton last time but I’m inclined to forgive that as he ended up further back in the field than is ideal and was in a wide lane throughout. A more favourable draw should ensure a better sit this time and he was only beaten a head over C&D on his penultimate start when returning from a two-month break. A return to that level puts him in the frame.

15:50 Lingfield – Dembe – 1pt @ 9/1

Dembe won this race last year and although he’s 5lbs higher now, he was in brilliant form over the winter, placing four times in a row before disappointing at Kempton. The mile-and-a-half at a galloping track may have caught out his stamina reserves and he should be a lot happier back to 1m 2f again, especially here. He has an ideal draw to get covered up and Jamie Spencer’s style will suit him. The splits will have to come in the straight but if they do, he could repeat the trick.
