NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Edmonton Oilers Predictions, Odds for Jan. 16
Leafs vs Oilers Preview
First time these two Canadian teams have faced off this season. The Maple Leafs and the Oilers went into the season as Stanley Cup favourites, but it’s fair to say both haven’t played up to their potential through most of the first half of 2023-24. In Edmonton, however, the tide is turning in a major way of late.

Leafs Insights
The Leafs (21-12-8, sixth in the Eastern Conference) roll into Edmonton having lost three in a row, looking uninspired of late. This is the first of a four-game road trip. The team has posted an 11-3-6 record so far this season on the road.
The Leafs are coming off a 4-2 loss at home Sunday night against the Detroit Red Wings. Auston Matthews is on pace for 70 goals, and the odds-on favourite to win the Rocket Richard Trophy for league scoring leader. That’s been the only good news. Their penalty killing has been terrible – 77.1 per cent, tied for 23rd in the NHL. They’re up against a potent Oilers power play, led of course by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, currently seventh in the league, operating at a 25.2 per cent clip
Martin Jones (7-5-1, 2.30 GAA, .924 SV%, two shutouts) is the probable starter in goal for the Leafs. RW Ryan Reaves remains out with a lower body issue, and G Joseph Woll is still recovering from an ankle issue.
Oilers Insights
The Oilers are rolling – ten wins in a row, a franchise record. During that streak Edmonton has outscored their opponents 40-17. They’re eighth in the Western Conference (23-15-1, 47 points). Look for Stuart Skinner in goal for Edmonton (18-8-1, 2.63 GAA, .903 SV%, two shutouts). LW Ryan McLeod is listed as day-to-day with an illness.
Player Props
According to DraftKings, Matthews Anytime Goalscorer (1.83), McDavid First Goalscorer (7.50), McDavid Shots on Goal Under 3.5 (2.05), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Shots on Goal Under 2.5 (2.05) are the most bet player props so far.
At BetMGM, McDavid To Score Anytime Goal (1.91), Matthews To Score Anytime Goal (1.87), McDavid Under 3.5 Shots (2.00), Zach Hyman Over 3.5 Shots (1.87) and Matthews Over 3.5 Shots (1.67) is seeing the most action.
Leafs vs Oilers Betting Odds: Our Picks & Predictions
These are the NHL odds for the game:
- Moneyline 2.30 (Leafs), 1.67 (Oilers)
- Spread +1.5 1.55 (Leafs), -1.5 2.50 (Oilers)
- Over/Under 6.5
Take the Oilers ATS. The Leafs have been lousy the past three games, led by a slumping John Tavares. Another loss or two and people will start speculating about a coaching change there. There’s too much on the line this season for any drawn-out losing streaks. This is the second time this season the Leafs have lost three games in a row. The last time they bounced back with four straight wins. But the Oilers are no San Jose Sharks, or Anaheim Ducks.
