Toronto Maple Leafs Insights
C Auston Matthews has 14 goals over his past nine games. The Leafs are coming off a 4-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, with Matthews scoring twice. That was his 10th multi-goal game of the season. On the injury front, the Leafs are without F Ryan Reaves, out with a lower-body injury, D Mark Giordano (broken finger), and G Joseph Woll (ankle). Martin Jones starts in goal for the Leafs tonight – 4-1-0 in six games this season, 2.79 GAA, .917 SV%.
Senators Insights
Not many prognosticators had the Senators last in the Eastern Conference at the Christmas break, but that’s exactly where they are. Their last game was a win, though – 5-4 in overtime over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. That win ended a six-game losing streak. D Thomas Chabot remains out for the Sens (lower body injury), as does RW Mathieu Joseph (day to day). Joonas Korpisalo (6-11, 3.62 GAA, .890 SV%) is listed as probable to start in goal tonight.
Player Props
According to BetMGM this morning, a lot of that Christmas stocking cash is on Auston Matthews, on pace for 70+ goals. Matthews leads the league, with 28 goals in 30 games, an insane pace. Most bet props there are Matthews Over 1.5 Points, Matthews to Score Anytime Goal and William Nylander Over 1.5 Points.
And at FanDuel, it’s much the same – Matthews for Anytime Goal Scorer, Senators’ F Tim Stutzle Anytime Goal Scorer, and Sens’ F Drake Batherson for Anytime Goal Scorer are seeing most of the player prop betting.
Leafs vs Sabres Betting Odds: Our Picks & Predictions
- ⭐ Moneyline 2.40 (Senators), 1.60 (Leafs)
- ⭐ Spread +1.5 1.62 (Senators), -1.5 2.35 (Leafs)
- ⭐ Over/Under 7
The Leafs are heavy favourites, as they should be, at home. We’re going with the Over. Goaltending has been sketchy for both teams this season, to say the least (team GAA for the Sens is fifth worst in the league, and defensively overall they are 28th in goals against per game, averaging 3.55, with the Leafs at 3.35 per game, for 23rd in the NHL). The Leafs are a league powerhouse on offence – 3.58 goals per game, third in the NHL, but we bet you didn’t know the Sens are tied for eighth (3.41). The Sens have a great young core, led by Stutzle (32 points, leads the team) and Brady Tkachuk (15 goals).
