Leafs Insights
The Leafs roll into Long Island on a four-game winning streak, after a 7-1 win at home against the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night at Scotiabank Arena. Auston Matthews remains the online betting favorite for the NHL’s Rocket Richard trophy, for leading goal scorer (2.10 last week, 1.67 this week, at BetMGM), and is making moves on the odds chart for the Hart Trophy, for the league’s most valuable player, now as well (13.00 last week, 12.00 this week). Matthews leads the NHL in goals at 31.
Winger Mitch Marner had a four-point game against the Sharks. Struggling netminder Ilya Samsonov was called back up from the minor leagues yesterday, and will back up Martin Jones tonight (8-3-0, 1.98 GAA, .934 SV%, 2 shutouts). The Leafs are getting healthier – RW Ryan Reaves is back practising after a knee injury. Other than goalie Joseph Woll, who is out the longer term with an ankle sprain, Reaves is the last regular out of the lineup. LW Matthew Knies (leg) and RW Noah Gregor (illness) are day-to-day.
Islanders Insights
While they’re still in the playoff hunt, the Islanders’ play has slipped a little of late, losing four of their past five. Don’t sleep on their power play though – ninth in the NHL (23.9 per cent), up against a Leafs’ penalty-killing unit that’s 21st in the league (78 per cent).
Player Props
According to FanDuel, Matthews Anytime Goal Scorer (1.95), William Nylander Anytime Goal Scorer (2.30), and John Tavares Anytime Goal Scorer (2.90) are leading the charge in player prop betting for tonight’s game.
Leafs vs Islanders Betting Odds: Our Picks & Predictions
These are the NHL odds for the game:
- Moneyline 1.77 (Leafs), 2.10 (Islanders)
- Spread -1.5 2.80 (Leafs), +1.5 1.44 (Islanders)
- Over/Under 6.5
We like the Leafs ATS. Matthews has been tearing it up, and never underestimate John Tavares’ motivation when he steps back into the lair of his former team. That’s pretty good value on the Leafs’ spread. The Islanders are likely to start Ilya Sorokin in goal – 12-8-8, .3.20 GAA, 909 SV%, two shutouts. He’s no slouch. The Leafs are 6-2-2- in their last ten against the Islanders, and their power play is sixth in the NHL (27.0). They are fourth in the league in goals per game (3.58). William Nylander, fresh off signing a new, eight-year, $92 million contract, and third in league scoring currently, has a spring in his step, on a line with Tavares.
