Ashes Whitewash Odds: Will Australia Beat England 5-0 in the Series?
Betting sites reckon an Australian Ashes whitewash now has a 40% chance of happening as England’s disastrous tour Down Under drags towards the fourth Test in Sydney this January.
England have produced arguably one of the worst Ashes performances in the history of this rivalry over the past month, falling to heavy defeats in all three matches so far.
So humbling was their innings and 14 run loss at the MCG that an inquest has already begun into whether or not Joe Root is right to remain as captain.
It is understood that isolating head coach Chris Silverwood – who will miss the fourth Test due to a positive Covid-19 result – is set for the chop as selectors keep faith in Root.
But all that will likely come once this tour is over. For now, England’s job is to avoid what would be a third whitewash in the past 15 years.
Ashes Whitewash Odds
At the start of the series cricket betting sites priced a 5-0 Australian Ashes victory at 10/1. Yet after three stinging victories those odds have now come in to 6/4.
That suggests UK bookmakers are giving Australia a 40% chance of whitewashing England and sending the tourists home humiliated.
Remarkably, the drop in odds began after the first ball of the first Test, when Mitchell Starc bamboozled Rory Burns at the Gabba.
Since then, the odds have only gone one way and now over 50% of all bets on the series result are backing a 5-0 home win.
As for any hope of an England fightback, the Ashes betting odds have a 3-2 result priced at 33/1, which indicates just how unlikely both bookies and punters believe two Test wins in Sydney and Hobart would be.
Ashes Fourth Test Odds
Meanwhile, England’s chances of getting something from the fourth Test at the SCG have improved after confirmation that Aussie batter Travis Head will miss the match due to Covid.
Head has proved a bane for England’s bowling attack, averaging 62 over the series. His omission saw Australia’s odds of winning the Test widen to 10/11, while the price of a draw has come in to 5/4.
Sydney may well be England’s best chance of avoiding defeat in this series but online betting sites aren’t exactly convinced that Root’s troops are on for victory.
Indeed, punters can back England as high as 9/1 to win this match. And even at this price bettors aren’t flocking to risk their money.
