Saturday's Horse Racing Tips: James Boyle's Best Bets At Southwell

17:05 Southwell – Glen Buck – 1pt @ 11/4
Glen Buck is easily found and should have a serious chance of winning. Given that he’s a six-year-old who is making it onto the racecourse for the fourth time, it’s safe to say that his career has not gone to plan. On the plus side, he has displayed plenty of talent in limited attempts.
It seemed as if things may get interesting at the beginning of his four-year-old season as he won a couple of novices on the All-Weather, both on Tapeta, but then he went missing again for almost two years before reappearing at Wolverhampton six weeks ago.
He lost his unbeaten record that day, finishing a few lengths behind King’s Code, and looked like he’d either come on for the run or a sterner test of stamina. It’s possible both comments apply and he has more than a furlong extra to race over this time around, which should be a help.
Some decent horses are in opposition but if he’s not capable of winning a race like this from a mark of 83, I would be surprised. Jack Mitchell is back up having missed the ride last time and that is another help. The price won’t blow any minds but he must have a big chance.
17:35 Southwell – Laura’s Breeze – 2pts @ 13/2
Laura’s Breeze is yet to win a sprint but hasn’t had too many goes and shaped well last time when running at Wolverhampton. Having the widest draw didn’t help matters but the early speed was on the sedate side as well and she needed to post some quick sectionals to get into contention.
She did exactly that and ended up just over half-a-length behind the winner. It’s obviously low grade form and they’re never a lock to repeat it next time, but I thought it was a big effort in the circumstances and is one that she’ll be capable of building on.
It's possible that there’ll be a stronger tempo today, the draw is less of a problem and this test is more of a grind than Wolverhampton. Her last win came here and she’s 10lbs lower in the weights now. If the race is run to suit, she’s going to be a big player. Around 13/2 is a good play for me.
18:35 Southwell – Many A Star – 1pt @ 7/2
Many A Star hasn’t fared well with the draw on his last two outings and that yielded wider trips than ideal. Regardless, he shaped up well last time at Chelmsford and could have done with the pace stopping, which never happened as Rebel Path made all of the running.
He’s drawn wide again but it’s less of a problem over this C&D and Hector Crouch taking over from an apprentice should lessen the likelihood of ending up in bother position-wise. He was in a wider spot for his C&D win last April as well and has a similar mark.
The two main market rivals running under penalties are open to more improvement than he is but I think he could have a class edge on them. It’s not easy to be certain but he’s the biggest price out of the trio and has the ability to show more than was the case for last month’s run.
