14:05 Sandown – Terwada – 1pt @ 11/1

I wonder whether it could be worth chancing Terwada. He flopped in the Spring Cup on his seasonal return but was better last time when mid-division behind Sonny Liston. Where he raced wasn’t exactly a help either, the main pace powering on towards the near side of Newbury’s track.

It was still a definite step in the right direction and he should get a more thorough pull through the race this time, which would help matters. His mark is down another couple of pounds to 90 and one of his successes last term came from this rating.

Sandown’s track could play to his strengths, whilst Tom Marquand taking over in the saddle is never a bad thing and he rides the course well. If they’re able to get a nice sit behind the speed and get to the front at any point during the climb for home, it mightn’t be simple to reel them in.

14:25 York – Carnival Zain – 1pt @ 20/1

Carnival Zain doesn’t have the best recent form figures but he won five races in 2022, progressing from a mark of 64 to finish the season on 91, and couldn’t get back to that level last year. As a result, the handicapper had him in a tight grip and he never troubled the judge.

He was down to 80 when returning this season over C&D and he finished seventh of the 18 runners, beaten just less than five-lengths. It was a decent run and, having been a bit tight for room as the winner switched across him coming to the final furlong, I thought he rallied well.

It was a run that either suggests he needs to come down further in the weights or he needed the run, and I’m hoping it’s the latter. It was his first outing for 288 days so he’s fully entitled to come on for it and, if he does, there’s every chance that a better performance is on the cards.

This is a tougher contest so he will have to improve, but I don’t think class is a problem if he’s able to get back to anything even close to his best. He’s a half-stone below his last win, the draw is fine, York suits his style and I think he’s underestimated. Hopefully he could show why.

15:15 Sandown – Grand Karat – 1pt @ 15/2

Grand Karat has no chance if he runs like he did at Newmarket on this season’s return to action. That came over a mile, his first attempt at the trip, and he was ridden back in the field. That gave him no chance of involvement, although he did look quite flat regardless.

Reverting to 7f should be a help, Harry Charlton has had two months to get him right at home and prove that he’s well-treated off 80. His juvenile form with the likes of Alshinfarah, Remaadd and Orne show that he’s talented and if the ground isn’t a problem, he can be involved.

15:35 York – We Never Stop – 1pt @ 22/1

Kevin Ryan and Rowan Scott teamed up for a big priced winner here yesterday and I’m wondering whether lightning could strike twice with We Never Stop. He’s a speedy sort who is well suited to racing at York and is likely to have been targeted at this since his Newmarket return.

He finished fifth behind James’s Delight that day, but was unlikely to have been fully fit and having got outpaced in the dip, he ran on again towards the finish. He was only beaten five-lengths and, under the assumption that he wasn’t fully ready to go, I’d view it quite positively.

Whether he’s good enough to win a race of this nature is questionable but his mark is 84 and that has got to be workable. The rider is boiling down to his lowest weight to take over and I wonder whether he might point and shoot along the near rail from the highest stall in 19.

It’s tough to be certain and I like a lot of the runners in the field. I just don’t think this one should be such a big price and he’s still entitled to improve, despite his most recent form figures not being as attractive as some of the others. He could do anything but may be worth a small bet.

16:45 York – Barley – 1pt @ 18/1

Barley was one of my bets when he ran at Beverley last time and he hung right in behind horses when the going got tough late on. That’s never what you’d want to see, but it hasn’t been a recurring trend or anything and maybe something else was at play.

Regardless, from a pure form point of view, he wasn’t disgraced in finishing fourth and was only a few lengths off Zozimus. That rival is single-figures in the betting at present, but with a 3lb swing on a flat track, the gap in their prices is too big and I think they’ve got similar claims.

Drawing gate 14 again, as was the case when behind Botanical on his penultimate start, isn’t ideal. It has the potential to limit what he’s capable of doing, but the calibre of opposition was a bigger issue that day and it’s not impossible to get involved from a wider start over the C&D.

His mark is down to 75, 11lbs below his sole handicap success when trained by Martyn Meade, and he ran a promising seasonal reappearance at Redcar off 79. There enough in place to suggest he’s a value play at anything over 16/1 and it’ll be interesting to see how he goes in the market.
