Dancing on Ice is to return for a 17th series in the new year, but there has been plenty of speculation on betting sites that it might be the show's last.

Head judges Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean inadvertently fuelled such speculation earlier this year by announcing they are retiring from ice skating in 2025 and they will bow out with a farewell tour.

It led to reports in February that the ITV show was facing an "uncertain future", and while a 17th series is due to take place in the new year, it's not known how long the programme will last.

For now, Torvill and Dean will skate on our screens in the show's 17th season.

They could still carry on as judges on the show afterwards, but they recently remained coy about this, admitting an answer about the programme's future will become clear at the end of next year's series.

When quizzed on the show's future, Dean told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: "By the end of the series we’ll know."

Torvill added: "It’s year by year..."

Despite being unsure of the show's future, Torvill and Dean hope the programme can go on for many years to come.

Dean added to the publication: "We would love the show to continue. It’s been a renaissance for us.

"It started in 2006 so it’s almost 20 years of our life as well. We’ve been doing Dancing on Ice longer than we did as competitors."

However, it's just 8/13 that the programme comes to an end after the 2025's 17th series and 11/10 it survives another season before ITV call it quits.

One major blow for Dancing on Ice would be if Torvill and Dean were to depart their roles as coaches and judges.

The Olympic gold medallists are to embark on a farewell tour, entitled Torvill & Dean: Our Last Dance, in April and May.

It will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their legendary skating partnership.

Torvill And Dean's Swansong?

But if the pair want a complete break from ice skating afterwards then they may decide not to return to Dancing on Ice for an 18th series - if there is one.

They are just 4/7 on betting apps to depart the programme in 2025, following the upcoming season, and it's Evens they bow out in 2026.

However, if they remain on the programme that will be a big boost for the show to keep going.

Yes, the ratings aren't as good as its heyday - but terrestrial TV as a whole is struggling with the rise of streaming services.

Despite this, ITV have kept hold of in-demand host Holly Willoughby and they have managed to attract the likes of Great Britain Olympic legend Steve Redgrave for next year's line-up.

Other stars set to compete include Coronation Street mainstay Sam Aston and EastEnders legend Charlie Brooks.

It's 5/1 that Dancing on Ice remains on our screens until 2028 or later and just 4/1 that Torvill and Dean are still on the show then, too.

One thing we do know is series 17 is taking place, and it's around a month away - and it's a crowded market.

Corrie star Sam is the early 5/1 favourite with Ladbrokes to win the Dancing on Ice trophy, following in the footsteps of former cobbles favourite Ryan Thomas, who won the competition earlier this year.

However, The Traitors star Mollie Pearce could provide some strong competition.

She is just 11/2 for victory, followed by TOWIE's Dan Edgar (6/1) and ex-Love Island star Chris Taylor (7/1).

Dame Sarah Storey was due to take part in the series, but she has had to pull out of the contest after fracturing her ankle in training.

She had been in the midfield of the outright market alongside the likes of reality TV star Ferne McCann, who is 8/1 and soap stars Chelsee Healey and Charlie, who are 10/1 and 14/1 respectively.

Elsewhere, stand-up comedian Josh Jones is an 20/1 outsider, while former footballer Anton Ferdinand (22/1) and TV presenter Michaela Strachan (25/1) might find it tough.

Olympic legend Redgrave is used to finishing in the medal positions, but that could be a tall order in Dancing on Ice if his opening price is anything to go by.

He is currently propping up the market at 33/1
