World Grand Prix Betting Tips:

Day one of the World Grand Prix gets underway this evening and although reigning champion Michael van Gerwen is not in action until tomorrow, the opening night sees world No.1 Gerwyn Price and world champion Michael Smith in action.

The uniquely formatted tournament requires players to start each leg by hitting a double and is the competition that poses the biggest threat to the power scorers in the sport, with a few shock winners over the years that include Daryl Gurney and Robert Thornton.

Tonight sees the commencement of round one in which a race to two sets (first to three legs in each set) is required for victory, and there are eight matches on show.

A flurry of world champions and big names will take to the stage, all vying for the trophy and there are a few clashes that have caught our eye on darts betting sites heading into it.

Aspinall Set To Take Down The Bunting

For us, this has all the potential to be the game of the night and is somewhat a shame it is played over such a short format so early in the competition.

A few years ago, you would not be surprised to have seen Stephen Bunting enter this tie as the favourite however, Nathan Aspinall’s form over the past couple of years which has seen him collect a World Matchplay title makes him the favourite for this one.

The Asp has always been known for his big checkouts and ability to clinch matches via the outer ring, so this tournament suits him down to the ground.

The Stockport native jokingly suggested that fans should have a punt on him to win the tournament earlier in the week, as his price is only getting shorter, which showcases his confidence heading into the tournament.

We don’t expect the Bullet to be a pushover in this one and a scoreline of 2-1 is what most fans will expect, but with Aspinall’s ability to deal with the pressure and his history of winning major titles, we see the 32-year-old edging this battle in what promises to be a cracker.

Smith To Bully His Way Into Last 16

Callan Rydz has the troublesome task of facing the world champion on the opening night in what's anticipated to be an uphill battle from the get-go.

The Riot has teetered on the edge of the world's elite for some time now, and it looked inevitable that the Geordie would push on from his quarter-final appearance in the 2022 World Championships.

However, it’s not been a straight forward year for Rydz who has made no secret of his issues away from the oche and with the format being one that can easily frustrate a player, he would need to make a fast start to stand a chance of beating Michael Smith.

Smith is the biggest scorer in darts and probably the best 180 hitter on the planet, which is why he is the overwhelming favourite on betting apps, but similarly to Rydz, he can be volatile should things not go his way early doors.

There is no doubt this could be a potential banana skin for the St Helens man, but as we head into the business end of the year he will want to ensure he makes the latter stages of major tournaments in preparation to defend his World Championship title at Alexandra Palace in December.

For this reason, we believe the Bully Boy will come through this one unscathed in what could be a great match between two tungsten terminators if they bring their A game to the Morningside Arena.

Cross To Make A Statement Against Gilding

When Rob Cross burst onto the scene with that World Championship victory in 2018, people didn’t know if he would be able to continue his scintillating form.

However, Voltage has more than kept up with the game’s elite for the five years that have followed, claiming two European Championship titles and the World Matchplay trophy in 2019.

His success includes a plethora of final appearances in majors, but Cross has never gone further than the last 16 in the World Grand Prix and there is no time like the present to change this, especially with a favourable draw in the form of Andrew Gilding.

Although on paper Gilding may be overlooked, he loves the role of the underdog and stunned the world when defeating Michael van Gerwen in the UK Open final this year to claim his first PDC major title.

It’s been a topsy-turvy year for Goldfinger but on the whole he has had a much-improved season that has seen him climb back into the world’s top 32.

Despite this, dealing with Rob Cross is a whole different kettle of fish. Gilding’s best performance in this tournament was way back in 2014 and with Cross having more experience in recent times with this format we expect him to come through this clash with minimal trouble.

Tip: Rob Cross to beat Andrew Gilding – 4/9 with BoyleSports
