Ryan Fox Masters Odds: Can the New Zealander win at Augusta National?

Since the Masters tournament was first played in 1934, there has never been a champion from New Zealand.

Adam Scott became the first Australasian player to land a Green Jacket in 2013, although we still await a Kiwi matching that achievement and it will be Ryan Fox who flies the flag for this proud nation between April 6-9.

According to the US Masters betting, it’s certainly a big ask for a player who will be making his debut at Augusta National at the age of 36.

He qualified for this tournament after featuring in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings and it will be a proud moment to make an appearance after several years of trying.

Fox doesn’t have a particularly glittering record when it comes to major golf tournaments and there’s a school of thought that Masters debutants are at a distinct disadvantage considering the unique nature of Augusta National, although the New Zealander will be sure to relish the challenge.

In 2022, Fox was able to make the cut in the PGA Championship but he finished well down the order in 54th place.

However, he only lasted two rounds in the US Open and Open Championship, with his best ever major achievement coming in the latter competition in 2019 when tying for 16th place.

Fox is a 200/1 chance with golf betting sites to win the Masters and we shouldn’t be completely dismissive of Fox’s chances considering he was in the winners’ enclosure in early October last year.

A victory in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship was his second European Tour win in the space of a year after previously winning the Ras Al Khaimah Classic.

Having also lost in a play-off against Victor Perez in the Dutch Open last year, this is a player who is enjoying his best golf at a later stage of his career.

A tied-27th achievement in the 2023 Players Championship suggests that he might be coming to the boil at the right time as far as the Masters is concerned.

Indeed, 2022 was a breakthrough season for someone previously regarded as a journeyman and there won’t be any pressure on his shoulders when it comes to Augusta National.

Making the cut will be a significant achievement for a player who is regarded as one of the outsiders in the field.
