Gavin & Stacey Spin-Off Series Odds: Will There Be Another Episode?

There weren't many dry eyes in 12.3 million households in the UK on Christmas Day, as the emotional finale of Gavin & Stacey aired.

The BBC show's last-ever episode triumphed in the Christmas Day ratings, after more than 12 million tuned in to see series co-creators Ruth Jones and James Corden's characters Nessa and Smithy finally tie the knot.

It was the most-watched Christmas Day programme in 16 years, and following the staggering viewing figures, there has been plenty of speculation on betting sites about a potential spin-off show.

Gavin & Stacey Bosses 'Hopeful'

To add fuel to the fire, it has been reported that BBC bosses are "living in hope" that a potential spin-off emerges one day.

A TV source told The Sun newspaper: "James and Ruth are adamant this is the last of Gavin & Stacey. But, when a programme achieves such results, execs will always hope for more.

"At the end of the day, ratings talk and it would be madness to close the door on such a hit forever when fans loved it so much.

"They were always more separate to the main group and a new universe could be developed which didn’t involve any of the core cast, so James and Ruth’s involvement could be a little different."

It's just 8/11 on betting apps that a Gavin & Stacey follow-up is made.

However, the BBC has said there are no plans for a spin-off, which supports the 11/8 that a side project doesn't get off the ground.

Despite this, it has been reported that BBC bosses have engaged in "casual discussions" about a possible spin-off.

But if further discussions took place, they would surely centre around which Gavin & Stacey characters would be at the forefront of a potential spin-off.

Adrian Scarborough and Julia Davis' characters Pete and Dawn are the current frontrunners.

The source added to the publication: "Bosses have had casual discussions about whether options like a Pete and Dawn spin-off could work."

In the finale, the two comical characters started off at loggerheads after it emerged they had split up between the 2019 special and the 2024 episode.

However, they soon kissed - and much more - and made up.

It's 13/8 favourite that Pete and Dawn are the main subjects of a potential Gavin & Stacey spin-off, if one ever sees the light of day.

Such a show would be unlikely to struggle for material due to the couple's comical relationship, and Davis herself could even take over writing responsibilities after previously penning the likes of BBC Three comedy Nighty Night.

Gwen's Happy Ending

One of the big surprises of the finale occurred when it was revealed Dawn had been on a date with Smithy's pal Chinese Alan.

It's 5/1 for a spin-off to be made about Chinese and Dawn, but it looks more likely that another of the finale's shock couples are the main focus.

One of the best moments of the 2024 episode happened when it was revealed Stacey's mum Gwen is now dating Nessa's ex, Dave Coaches.

Rob Brydon's character Uncle Bryn was less than happy about their romance, but many fans were delighted that Gwen had found a significant other.

As a result, there could be plenty of appetite for a spin-off involving Gwen and her new man.

It's just 2/1 that a Gwen and Dave Coaches spin-off series occurs, and it wouldn't even have to be set in Barry Island.

As we saw in the finale, Dave still has his bus, so a possible follow-up could see him and Gwen hit the road to explore the UK, or even go further afield.

Another character who was going places in the finale was Neil The Baby.

No longer a baby but still retaining that nickname, Neil - who was conceived following a Nessa and Smithy one-night stand - was preparing to relocate from Barry to Essex to start an apprenticeship with his dad.

But the finale also showed off Neil's incredible singing ability.

It's 5/2 that a Gavin & Stacey side project follows the teenager, and this could be off the back of his singing talents being recognised.

Fishing Trip To Finally Be Revealed?

One 17-year secret that wasn't divulged in the Gavin & Stacey finale was the fishing trip.

Ever since the show began, there has been talk of something going on between Uncle Bryn and his nephew Jason on a mystery fishing trip.

While some fans were desperate for the details to be revealed in the finale, they weren't.

However, it's 3/1 that Bryn and Jason are the subject of a spin-off, so perhaps all could be revealed then?

Of course, the two characters most fans would love to see a spin-off about would be Nessa and Smithy (4/1).

However, that would basically be a continuation of Gavin & Stacey itself, seeing as the pair seemed to almost become the main characters rather than Mathew Horne and Joanna Page's titular alter-egos.

Most thought 2019's Christmas special was going to be the final-ever episode of the sitcom, until Ruth and James confirmed earlier in 2024 that a finale would play out over the festive period.

Some Gavin & Stacey super-fans are now desperate for more, and still retain hope.

A source said: "No one thought James and Ruth would ever return following 2019’s special, so it’s definitely considered a ‘never say never’ situation and bosses live in hope.

"At this point they are rightly so proud of what they delivered and why would they risk ruining it all? But no one can be blamed for one day hoping for more."

Despite this, it looks unlikely.

In the run-up to the Christmas Day finale, both James and Ruth insisted it wouldn't be possible to make another episode.

This led to speculation that some of the main characters might meet their maker in the finale.

However, this wasn't the case.

Nessa and Smithy got their happy ending, and another episode is surely possible, but if there is to be a Gavin & Stacey continuation then a spin-off looks to be the best bet.

It's 7/4 that Ruth and James pen another episode of the main show, but it's just 4/7 they leave it at that.
