17:30 Southwell – Billy Bathgate – 1pt @ 4/1

Billy Bathgate is 0-10 under flat rules but has finished second on four occasions and will eventually find a race to win, with this one looking like a particularly good opportunity. There are no issues with his current well-being as his last three runs have yielded a neck second, a two-lengths fifth in a 0-80 and another second to a clearly well-handicapped winner over C&D a couple of weeks ago. 

He travelled strongly to the top of the straight last time but the winner didn’t have to overexert himself early and had plenty in the tank after getting first run. That was in a higher grade than today’s contest and if he is able to perform to the same level again, it’s hard to see how he won’t be in the frame once more. If all goes to plan in the run, he’ll be tough to beat and could finally have his day in the sun.

18:00 Southwell – La Traviata – 1pt @ 14/1

La Traviata is somewhat of an unknown quantity but hinted at having some ability in a Lingfield maiden a couple of months ago despite not seeming to enjoy the track and was strong on the exchange for her handicap debut at Wolverhampton. A wide draw hampered her there and she again never got involved in any meaningful way, but seemed to have something more in the locker at the line.

This time around, she’s drawn in four so has no excuses if the tactics are to get a more prominent pitch and a first-time hood could help as she has over-raced on both starts since joining this yard. Brian Barr hasn’t had a flat winner in an age but did have a couple over jumps of late and I think he may have a well-handicapped filly here if she could put it all together during the race. 12/1+ is worth a dart.

19:00 Southwell – Ebury – 1pt @ 6/1

Ebury hasn’t won for a long time but he’s running at a level where he almost has to pop up in something and some of the recent signs have been relatively positive. He had no chance of showing his true worth at Bath last time out when stepped up in trip to 1m 2f but previous to that he was fourth over 7f here and went well enough for some time before being outpaced by speedier types.

The mile at this track is better for him and he was second over C&D three starts ago off today’s mark in an amateur riders’ race. He was apprentice ridden the last twice as well so getting back under a fully-fledged jockey will do no harm. It’s hard to trust him too much for obvious reasons but this is the perfect sort of race for him and if he can’t threaten these, it will be a disappointment.
