Watch: The Panel React To France Win & Life Without Mbappe With McInally & Petit
Former France midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes his side have a lot more work to do if they want to emulate his golden generation of winning both the World Cup and Euros.
France's only goal in their 1-0 win over Austria came via an defensive error in which Kylian Mbappe's cut-back cross ricocheted off Maximilian Wober into his own net.
Despite Les Bleus not being at their best, football betting sites have now made them joint-favourites with England to win Euro 2024.
The most sour outcome for Didier Deschamps is that his star man Mbappe suffered a broken nose and looks set to at least miss their next match.
The Euro 2000 winner Petit joined The Panel host Alan McInally to discuss his country's chances of winning successive major tournaments.
Emmanuel Petit's France Review
"Yeah, the most important thing from the game was the three points. It is always special the first game when you go into a big competition like this.
"It was very important to win for the confidence, but as we all saw what happened it was a sweat and blood in that game. A fierce battle."
Despite France's tough start they are still the 8/13 favourites on betting apps to win Group D.
Petit isn't concerned with the French performance and believes the likes of Kingsley Coman and Bradley Barcola deserve to be given a chance, with Kylian Mbappe expected to be sidelined with a broken nose.
Outside of his home nation, Petit gave his thoughts on what he believed was a less than impressive victory for England over Serbia in their opener.
"Yeah I think they played very well first half," Petit admitted to McInally.
"They lost composure and confidence in the second half. I think physically it was very worrying to watch what was happening on the pitch."
"Of course the opponents played much better in the second half, but for me this is not an explanation for how England played. They lost so much easy ball, they disappeared physically, they were not in the battle anymore."
"Mentally they were suffering so much. So for me, right now I don't know what the real level of England is, so I need to see the second game from them."
