Ryan Fox Odds Shift On 2024 Major Win After BMW PGA Championship Triumph

Golf betting sites have tweaked their odds on New Zealander Ryan Fox winning a career-first major this year following his sensational victory at BMW PGA Championship in September.

The Aucklander beat off the spirited challenge of England’s Tyrrell Hatton and Aaron Rai to claim the biggest victory of his career to date.

Fox, 36, has never ranked inside golf’s top 20 and looked to have ruined his title chances on the final day at Wentworth when making a triple-bogey at the third hole.

But the son of All Blacks great Grant Fox recovered and sunk a birdie on the 18th to edge ahead of the chasing pack, card a five-under 67, and pick up the NZ$ 2.59m winners cheque at the DP World Tour’s flagship event.

“To have a back nine like that, especially after how I started the day, it's amazing,” said Fox. “I played great".

“I pretty much didn't miss a shot from the third hole onwards and saw a couple of putts go in and it was pretty cool feeling on the last to sort of know I had one to win and actually make it.”

New betting sites had Fox at 50.0 to win the BMW PGA Championship before a shot had been played. Those odds quickly tumbled as he made the cut and moved to within three shots of leader Ludvig Aberg ahead of the final day.

Aberg faded but Hatton emerged as the big contender for the title. However, an 88-minute break for rain and lightning during the back nine stalled Hatton’s revival, and Fox held on to claim victory.

It was Fox’s first Tour win since last October when he won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship by one stroke over Alex Noren and Callum Shinkwin.

And bookmakers have already shortened their odds on Fox winning one of golf’s majors this year.

Ryan Fox Odds 2024

  • PGA CHAMPIONSHIP – 125.0
  • MASTERS – 150.0
  • US OPEN – 125.0
  • THE OPEN – 100.0

Fox joined the European Tour relatively late in his career in 2017. He had played in the Open Championship two years before, but finished an uneventful tied-49th.

His best result to date at the majors was a tied-16th finish at the Open in 2019, where he was among the first-round leaders before fading away.

This year was the first season Fox has played in all four majors. His best result was tied-23rd at the PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

The bookies don’t think he has much of a chance of winning that title in 2024 at Valhalla, and have him down as a 125.0 outsider.

However, there has been a big shift in his odds to win the Masters. Some betting apps have cut Fox’s odds to 150.0 from 300.0 on him donning the Green Jacket this April.

Last year he said his career goal, after breaking into the PGA top 50, was to get an invite for Augusta.

He finished tied-26th on his first Masters tournament in 2023 and is priced alongside Hatton to win it in 2024.
