US PGA Championship Tips:

The world’s greatest golfers will converge upon Oak Hill Country Club in New York to vie for the Wanamaker Trophy on Thursday.

Bookmakers make Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler the joint favourites to win the PGA Championship this week.

Rahm stormed to victory in the Masters at Augusta last month, while Scheffler is also in fine form right now, so they will take some stopping.

Rory McIlroy is also near the top of the betting, along with famous names such as Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Brooks Koepka.

However, long-shots have thrived at this major championship in recent years, including rookie Collin Morikawa in 2020 and veteran Phil Mickelson in 2021.

They defied pre-tournament odds on betting sites of 30/1 and 250/1 respectively, while Justin Thomas was priced at 20/1 last year, when he beat 35/1 shot Will Zalatoris in a playoff.

It can pay to look a little further down the list when seeking PGA Championship bets, and we have identified some interesting long-shots for this year’s event.

Tony Finau US PGA Championship Odds

American golfers are on a seven-year winning streak at the PGA Championship, and that trend is likely to continue this time around.

Finau carries a great deal of momentum into the tournament after his victory at the Mexico Open at the end of April.

He is now up to 12th in the world rankings, which augurs well for his chances at the PGA Championship, as seven of the last 10 winners have come from inside the world’s top 15.

The East Course at Oak Hill has had a major redesign since it last hosted this tournament, and it now features a 7,400-yard par 70, which should play to Finau’s strengths.

He has never previously won a major, but he has secured a top-10 finish in two of the past three PGA Championships.

Twenty of the last 30 major championships have been claimed by a player that had never previously won one, and Finau has been knocking on the door for a while now, so it could be his turn to seize the limelight.

He is priced at 22/1 with golf betting sites, which looks like a good each-way punt, as it will pay a quarter of the odds on the top five places.

Max Homa US PGA Championship Odds

Homa has surged up to sixth in the official world rankings after delivering a string of eye-catching performances this year.

He won the Farmers Insurance Open and finished runner-up at the Genesis Open, T3 at the Tournament of Champions, T6 at the Players Championship and T8 in the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this month.

However, he has not earned much respect from the bookies, and he is currently priced at 40/1 with Bet365.

That could be a reflection of his poor performances in the majors - his best finish was T14 at last year’s PGA Championship - but Homa is on an upward curve right now.

He also has the skills to flourish on a tough course like Oak Hill - Homa ranks ninth for strokes gained: approach, 10th for strokes gained: putting and seventh tee to green on the PGA Tour this season. That makes him a compelling long-shot for glory in this tournament.

Tyrrell Hatton US PGA Championship Odds

The last Englishman to win the PGA Championship was Jim Barnes in 1919, but Hatton could be the man to end that dismal run.

He has finished in the top five at his last two events - T3 at the Wells Fargo on May 7 and T5 at the AT&T Byron Nelson last week.

That should give him confidence as he prepares for the PGA Championship, and he too has the skills to thrive at the new-look Oak Hill.

Tyrrell Hatton

He ranks fifth on the PGA Tour for total strokes gained this season, including sixth tee to green and 11th off the tee.

Hatton has two previous top-10 finishes at the PGA Championship, and he often produces his best golf when the temperatures are low, so he could be another interesting each-way punt at the chilly Oak Hill in Upstate New York this week.

He is best priced at 40/1 with BetVictor, but other bookmakers are offering a tighter 35/1 on Hatton.

Gary Woodland US PGA Championship Odds

If you are looking for a real long-shot, you might like to consider Woodland, who is currently languishing at No. 75 in the world rankings.

The 38-year-old American has not exactly set the world alight in recent years, but he often comes good at majors.

Woodland won the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach, and he was also T10 at last year’s US Open at Brookline.

Woodland reminded everyone of his quality when he finished T14 at the Masters last month, which could stand him in good stead.

He can generate tremendous power with the driver, but his short game is hit-and-miss.

Yet he looked pretty composed at Augusta, so odds of 90/1 with betting apps - which pays a fifth of the odds on the top seven places - look tempting.
