Coronation Street Christmas Storyline Odds: Gail Platt's Exes To Return?

Gail Platt will depart the Coronation Street cobbles on Christmas Day after 50 years in Weatherfield.

Helen Worth, who plays the iconic character, announced earlier this year she is to bow out of the ITV soap.

It was later rumoured that Sean Wilson, who played Gail's ex-husband Martin Platt, was to return as part of the character's exit storyline, but his Corrie comeback was later scrapped.

It came as police made an inquiry into an alleged indecent assault in 1997, but he has since been cleared.

Instead, Coronation Street bosses brought back John Thomson as part of Helen's exit plot to reprise his role as Gail's former flame Jesse Chadwick.

Gail now looks set to marry Jesse and flee to France with her new husband.

However, there is speculation on betting sites that some of her other exes might be back as part of her Weatherfield departure.

Richard's Return

One of Helen's most dramatic Corrie storylines took place in 2003 when Gail, her daughter Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and son David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) were kidnapped and driven into a canal by evil serial killer Richard Hillman, played by Brian Capron.

While the Platt family survived, Richard, who was branded "Norman Bates with a briefcase" by Gail, wasn't rescued and he drowned as part of the plot.

However, he looks set to return to the cobbles 21 years later - as a ghost.

A source told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "It’s a huge coup - and the first time a character has ever returned as an apparition.

"Of course, Richard perished, but he is back from the dead and there will be scenes of dialogue between him and Gail. She is clearly still haunted by him."

Brian is just 8/15 to return as part of Gail's exit, but could all her late husbands visit the legendary character in a dream sequence of some sort?

Gail has been married six times - with a seventh potentially to come - to Richard, Martin, Joe McIntyre (Reece Dinsdale), Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis) and Brian Tilsley (Christopher Quinten), who she wed twice.

Les' Family Fortune

Gail and her arch-nemesis Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) recently shared a drink at the Rovers Return, during which Eileen joked that Martin was the tallest of her exes because he is the only one still above ground.

Despite that, Martin looks the one least likely to make a Corrie comeback this Christmas, after Sean recently distanced himself from watching Gail's exit plot unfold.

He told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "I certainly couldn’t watch anything they used to substitute my performances.

"It is very difficult. I don’t know if I can ever go back."

It's 25/1 that Sean returns to Weatherfield this Christmas, but former Family Fortunes presenter Les is just 11/10 to be back from beyond the grave as Michael.

Les took part in Strictly Come Dancing last year and has appeared in the likes of The Madame Blanc Mysteries and Death In Paradise in the last couple of years, so a Corrie cameo could be up his street.

It's 5/2 for Reece, who played villainous Paul Ashdale in Emmerdale from 2020 to 2021, to return as Joe and, Christopher is 4/1 for a Brian comeback.

Another sequence in Gail's leaving storyline could feature some flashbacks, which might see Adam Rickitt, who played her son Nick Tilsley during his younger years, make a return of sorts.

Gail's half-brother Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) is 8/1 to come back from the dead.

Friends Reunited

While Gail's numerous lovers have featured in many of her Corrie storylines, she has also forged some strong friendships during her time in Weatherfield.

One of the strongest was her bond with Alma Halliwell (Amanda Barrie) when they both worked at her cafe 'Alma's', which is now known as Roy's Rolls.

Their friendship enabled Coronation Street writers to pen some comical lines for the duo.

However, it was the character's death in 2001 that resulted in the introduction of evil Richard, who is Alma's cousin and arrived in Weatherfield for her relative's funeral.

Amanda is 13/8 on betting apps to make a cobbles comeback this Christmas, while another of Gail's old pals, Tricia Hopkins (Kathy Jones) is 6/1 for a return.

Tricia was Gail's best pal for three years, from 1973 to 1976, and Kathy recently dropped a huge hint that she could be making a surprise cameo.

She wrote on X: "Oh heck what’s gone on? I’m here...just waiting for the call! (sic)"

Should Gail marry for a seventh time, then perhaps her old pal Tricia could reappear for the big day.

The nuptials aren't set in stone, but it's 8/13 she and Jesse tie the knot, which would be much to the disappointment of her mother Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls).

It's not yet known exactly how Gail will bow out of Weatherfield on Christmas Day, as images of the Christmas episode were released recently.

She is 8/15 for a tragic exit, but it's more likely the character has a well-earned happy ever after ending.

She's deserved it after 50 years on Coronation Street.
