Fury vs Whyte Tips: Our Picks For The Big Heavyweight Clash
Dillian Whyte left it to the very last minute to sign for a fight that has been in the making for years, but Tyson Fury will defend his world heavyweight title against Whyte on Saturday night.
Not that you'd know Whyte was readying himself for a bout, as the Brixton native has utterly refused to promote the fight in the lead-up to the event.
With the fight happening this weekend UK bookmakers have updated their odds, so we’ve delved through the best online betting sites for boxing for the pick of the prices.
Fury vs Whyte Has Been Years In The Making
Way back in 2015 Fury toppled long-reigning heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko, taking his belts and becoming the most decorated man in boxing.
Tyson should have followed up that victory with a succession of bouts against the best challengers in the division, including Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and Dillian Whyte, but instead his addictions got the better of him and he wasn’t seen in the squared-circle for over two-and-a-half years.
Despite the concerns, Fury made a successful comeback in 2018. At the end of that year, he outclassed Wilder but the two knockdowns he suffered were just enough for the American to sneak a dramatic draw.
Then in 2020 the Brit regained his title and in 2021 he verified his status by stopping Wilder on both occasions.
While Fury was away from the sport Whyte was making his name - the Londoner put together a string of 11 impressive wins between 2016 and 2019. Although he earned his title shot, the trilogy between Fury and Wilder meant Whyte was forced to keep busy on the sidelines for the last couple of years.
With the champ having delivered three formidable performances against one of the most dangerous men in boxing and Whyte having victories against a good, but lower, calibre of opponent, Tyson is considered a huge favourite with the best betting sites when they meet on Saturday at Wembley Stadium.
All that means are offering just 1/5 for the titleholder to keep his crown, while Whyte has come in from 5/1 to 7/2 to cause an upset.
Fury v Whyte Set For A Tactical 12 Rounds
For his second and third Wilder encounters Fury came in fit, strong and heavy. The game plan was to push Wilder backwards, where the power-punching Alabama man would be much less effective and Fury could grind him down.
Those tactics won’t always be ones chosen by Tyson and his team, and prior to 2020 the giant Brit was known for his slick, back foot style.
It will be interesting to see what Fury does against an opponent he knows much less well and someone who has a devastating left hook even as he retreats - as Dereck Chisora found out.
Both men have mediocre KO ratios for the heavyweight division around the mid-60% mark, so it’s surprising is pricing the fight to go the distance at a 7/4.
Whyte Has A Tough Job Nailing Down Fury
Whyte is strong and gutsy, and he has a solid array of shots including a decent jab, his problem is that Fury has the reflexes to avoid the big, looping power shots and the champ has the size to negate Whyte on the inside.
The consensus is that we will see a tip-top Whyte on Saturday after his training camp in a fishing village in Portugal's Algrave. But again, Fury is unlikely to underestimate a dangerous domestic rival in his first fight on English soil for almost four years.
A KO seems to be the only viable route to victory for ‘The Body Snatcher’ but, although big Tyson has been dropped a few times in his career, nobody has been able to turn the knockdown into a knockout.
Looking at the method of victory market across the best bookmakers, has an appealing price of 5/2 for Fury to win by decision.
Fury Could Close The Show
A dominant display from the unbeaten champ would test the resolve of Whyte.
The challenger was knocked down in the second half of scraps with Joshua, Oscar Rivas and Joseph Parker, and he was stopped, eventually, by Joshua in 2015 and shockingly by Alexander Povetkin in their first fight in 2020.
Fury isn’t known as a knockout artist, but he has scored notable late stoppage wins against Wilder (twice) and Chisora - even though he couldn’t conclusively KO either man he did enough to convince the corner, referee or doctor to step in and stop the contest.
For longer odds in this bout, it’s worth turning attention to the group round betting market and have listed Fury to win in round 9-12 at 10/3.
