Head to Head Sportsbooks Comparison in Massachusetts

😎 Best Overall Betting Experience: BetMGM vs Caesars

BetMGM and Caesars are undoubtedly two of the best Massachusetts sports betting apps. Both sites offer a great mobile app, a generous welcome bonus, and an excellent overall user experience.

BetMGM Massachusetts has the advantage when it comes to the number of sports available and also offers very slightly better odds than Caesars. Caesars does offer a larger welcome bonus, but this is more tailored to the expert sports bettor.

In the end, both Massachusetts sportsbooks offer a great product. Still, we give a slight advantage to BetMGM due to the excellent user experience on the app and the faster payouts available.

🎁 Best Overall Rewards Scheme: Caesars vs BetMGM

Caesars Rewards and MGM Rewards are two long-standing, well-established rewards schemes offering great value to customers. ⚡ Best Online Sportsbook for payouts: BetMGM vs WynnBET

Massachusetts sportsbooks do not allow deposits with credit cards or withdrawals to debit cards, but BetMGM and WynnBET provide a wide range of other payment options. This includes e-wallets, online banking, ACH, and withdrawing in person from a casino cage.

You can do this with BetMGM at MGM Springfield Casino and WynnBET Sportsbook in Encore Boston Harbor. We give BetMGM the title in this category, as e-wallet withdrawals are frequently completed within 24 hours.

💥 Our View: BetMGM is the best online sportsbook for payouts

We think that DraftKings and BetMGM both offer customers a 10/10 quality sportsbook app. Everything you could want from a sportsbook is available on these apps in Massachusetts. Markets are easy to find, the apps are responsive, and you can place bets in seconds.

DraftKings takes the edge over BetMGM thanks to its mobile-exclusive live streaming and DraftKings Social feature, which works excellently on mobile. The free-to-play sportsbook daily pools are interactive and highly enjoyable to play on mobile as well.

💥 Our View: DraftKings is best for mobile betting

☝️ Best for new bettors: FanDuel vs Caesars

All of our recommended sportsbooks are suitable for new bettors, but FanDuel and Caesars are the two that stand out from the rest. Caesars may have the easiest app to use, and users frequently comment on how easy it is to place bets.

FanDuel trumps Caesars for two reasons. Firstly, FanDuel offers a friendly beginner welcome bonus of a no sweat bet. Secondly, FanDuel has a host of beginner guides and tips to make your first Massachusetts sports gambling experience enjoyable and understandable.

💥 Our View: FanDuel is the best sportsbook for new bettors.

😊 Best customer support: WynnBET vs FanDuel

You can contact WynnBET and FanDuel via email or live chat 24/7. We engaged with live chat with all online sportsbooks in MA, and we found WynnBET to be the most helpful and responsive.

We’ve compared the odds for the Patriots to win Super Bowl, and if you bet on the Pats to win it all, DraftKings offer odds of +6500, whereas FanDuel offers lower odds of +4500.

💥 Our View: DraftKings is the best for odds on New England Patriots

🏀 Best for odds on NBA Boston Celtics: FanDuel vs Caesars

The Boston Celtics are one of the most successful franchises in NBA history, so it's no surprise many fans want to bet on the team repeating past success. From our research, FanDuel seems to offer the best betting lines on the Celtic, providing more generous betting lines than Caesars on a regular basis.

💥 Our View: FanDuel is best for odds on the NBA Boston Celtics

Understanding Massachusetts Sports Betting Laws

It took several years and many attempts, but online Massachusetts sports betting is finally available. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed HB 5164 in the dying moments of the 2022 legislative session, declaring betting legal in Massachusetts. The idea of legal Massachusetts sports betting was discussed every year after 2018 when the US Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) and allowed individual states to determine the legality of sports betting in that state.

While there was a broad agreement among Massachusetts lawmakers in the Massachusetts House of Representatives that legalizing sports betting would be a good move for the state, significant disagreements caused delays to every bill. The critical factors in clashes were the tax rate applied to Massachusetts betting sites and whether betting on in-state college teams should be banned. In the end, the final terms of HB 5164, titled the Massachusetts Sports Wagering Act, were as follows:

Massachussetts Sports Betting Timeline

  • PASPA is overturned by the US Supreme Court. This landmark decision allows individual states to decide whether to make sports betting legal in Massachusetts.

  • 11 different sports betting bills are tabled in an attempt to make betting legal in Massachusetts. The lack of cohesion across the bills causes delays, ensuring no progress was made for Massachusetts betting in 2019.

  • The bills from 2019 are eventually pooled into a single bill. HB 4559 bounces around the House and Senate, but eventually, the bill fails in the Senate due to disagreements on the sports betting terminology used.

  • Lessons from the previous year are not learned, and multiple sports betting bills are proposed. At one point, over 20 active pieces of legislation attempted to legalize sports betting in Massachusetts.

  • HB 3977 is proposed to the House. This bill consolidates elements of various House and Senate bills. HB 3977 passes the House by 156-3 and now moves to the Senate for review.

  • The Senate makes various amendments to HB 3977, including changes to the tax rate and introducing bans on in-state college betting and advertising during games. The Senate passes the revised bill (HB 3993), and it moves back to the House.

  • The House rejects the changes introduced by the Senate. Several weeks pass with no visible progress. Gov. Baker publicly voices his displeasure, stating his desire to pass a Massachusetts sports betting law before the legislative session ends on July 31, 2022.

  • Compromise is reached deep into the night on the last sitting of the 2022 legislative session. Both the House and Senate agree on tax rates, advertising, and in-state betting, so the new bill (HB 5164) moves to Gov. Baker for signing to become the Massachusetts sports betting legislation.

  • Gov. Baker signs HB 5164, signifying the most crucial day in Massachusetts sports betting history. Online Massachusetts sports betting is legal, and the action moves to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to ensure that the Massachusetts market is ready for launch.

  • On-site sports betting began on Jan. 31 in Massachusetts. Mobile wagering is expected to begin before the March 14 start of the NCAA men’s March Madness basketball tournament, but no exact date has been provided.

  • The Massachusetts sports betting launch occurs, with three retail sportsbooks given the go ahead by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission and opening just in time for the Super Bowl.

  • MA mobile sports betting launches with six online sportsbooks available. Massachusetts sports betting revenue exceeds expectations, with over $550 million of bets taken in March.

What are the MA Sports Betting Licenses available?

Massachusetts online sportsbooks are available to a select few organizations. Commercial Massachusetts casinos, racetracks or racinos, OTBs, and online operators can offer MA sports betting.

There are up to 15 online Massachusetts betting sites allowed under Massachusetts law, with casinos and the three racetracks in the state permitted to apply for sportsbook licenses as well.

Eight licenses are set aside for partnerships with a land-based partner, while seven licenses can be issued on a standalone basis. A Massachusetts license fee of $5.2 million is payable every five years.

The Role of the MA Sports Betting Regulators

Sports betting in Massachusetts is regulated by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, which also oversees casino gaming and horse racing. The mission statement of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission MGC is "to create a fair, transparent, and participatory process for implementing the expanded gaming law".

This is done by five full-time commissioners who oversee all licensing and regulatory processes. The five commissioners who head up the Massachusetts Gaming Commission are aided by over 100 full-time staff.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission created the regulatory framework that needed to be established after HB 5164 was signed.

Any sportsbook wanting to apply to offer legal sports betting in Massachusetts needs to go through a thorough investigation by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to ensure that the company is fit for purpose.

List of MA Important Betting Regulation Resources

Mass Sports Betting Taxes

You are required to pay taxes if you earn winnings from Massachusetts betting sites. You must declare all your winnings to the IRS and complete a W-2G form if you win over $600. Mass sportsbooks can withhold up to 25% of your winnings as tax. You must also declare your winnings in your state income tax return, payable at a flat rate of 6.25%.

Massachusetts Sports Betting Market vs Neighboring States

Now that legal Massachusetts sports betting is available, there is less onus for Massachusetts bettors to travel to neighboring states to bet on sports.

Massachusetts shares a land border with five states, and all but one have made online and retail sports betting legal in Massachusetts.

New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire all offer legal sports betting. Interestingly, all of these states have the same restrictions for in-state collegiate betting, where it is not possible to wager on college teams from within the state.

The only state bordering Massachusetts that doesn't allow sports betting is Vermont. However, this may soon change, with HB 127 awaiting a signature from Governor Phil Scott.

Prohibited Wagers in Massachusetts

As with the rest of the New England region, there are restrictions on placing college sports bets. Betting on in-state college teams is prohibited unless the team participates in a tournament with four or more teams.

This means you can bet on MA teams competing in March Madness, which is not a concession allowed to nearby states. Placing prop bets on college athletes is also prohibited for MA sports betting operators.

Where can I bet on sports in Massachusetts

Retail sports betting is legalized in Massachusetts, and there are several locations where you can bet in person. The Massachusetts Sports Wagering Act allows for sports betting at Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor.

Construction is ongoing at Raynham Park, where a partnership with Caesars will see the largest sportsbook in Massachusetts opening. The new sportsbook will cost $28 million and feature over 20 betting kiosks and over 800 seats. Until then, full details of the other land-based sportsbooks are shown in the table below.

Responsible Gambling

Responsible gambling is promoted very strongly in Massachusetts, with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission requiring sportsbooks to meet high standards for player protection. You can access a state-wide self-exclusion program to prohibit yourself from playing for a specific amount of time.

Many sportsbooks offer tools such as deposit limits and time-outs to ensure you can keep your gambling in check. There are also organizations that support problem gamblers and their families, such as the Massachusetts National Council for Problem Gambling and the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health.
