Nottingham Forest have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Aaron Ramsey after he agreed to terminate his £400,000-a-week contract at Juventus.

Betting sites make the newly promoted Premier League side the odds-on favourites to sign him on a free transfer.

However, they could face competition from the likes of Cardiff and Everton for the former Arsenal midfielder.

We have rounded up the leading contenders in the race for Ramsey’s signature.

Nottingham Forest

Forest have embarked upon an ambitious recruitment drive since beating Huddersfield in the Championship Play-Off final back in May.

That victory landed the club a £170m windfall, and they have been on a spending spree in a bid to remain in the top flight for the long-term.

Jesse Lingard, Dean Henderson, Taiwo Awoniyi, Neco Williams, Dean Henderson, Moussa Niakhaté, Giulian Biancone, Omar Richardson, Lewis O’Brien, Harry Toffolo, Brandon Aguilera and Wayne Henderson have all signed on the dotted line, taking the club’s summer spending past the £70m mark.

Ramsey could be the next new arrival. He is priced at just 4/6 with football betting sites to join Forest.

They have already strengthened in central midfield this summer by purchasing O’Brien from Huddersfield. However, Ramsey’s experience could prove crucial as they bid to beat the drop.

He struggled to make an impact at Rangers last season, but he made 262 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, and he also has 75 caps for Wales.

If he can get back to full fitness, Ramsey could be a valuable asset for the club. He will no longer command £400,000-a-week, but the club appear willing to meet his demands.

Cardiff

Cardiff are the second favourites on betting apps to secure an emotional reunion with Ramsey to his home country. He started his career at the club before leaving for the bright lights of London as a teenager.

A return to his hometown may be appealing, so the Bluebirds are priced at 8/1 to land the midfielder this summer.

However, the highest earning player in the squad is Alex Smithies, who takes home £33,000-a-week, so they may struggle to afford him.

Playing in the Championship may also be a turn-off for Ramsey when he has suitors in the Premier League.

He will be keen to nail down a place in the Wales squad for the World Cup later this year, and starring in the top flight gives him a better opportunity to showcase his talents.

As such, Cardiff could face an uphill struggle to bring Ramsey back to the club this summer.

Rangers

Giovanni van Bronckhorst

Ramsey spent the second half of last season on loan at Rangers. It seemed like a great move for both parties, but it did not work out.

He missed the decisive penalty in the Europa League final, and he was regularly left out of the starting 11 in big games.

Ramsey may be tempted to return to Glasgow in a bid to prove his worth to the Ibrox faithful, and he would have a decent chance of securing silverware in the Scottish Premiership.

However, manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst did not use him much during the loan spell, so the club may be unwilling to stretch their wage structure to accommodate him on a permanent deal. Rangers are 14/1 outsiders with Paddy Power to sign him.

Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard had a knack of arriving in the box at precisely the right moment during his trophy-laden playing career.

That was Ramsey’s speciality in an Arsenal shirt, so he may appeal to the Toffees boss.

However, reports suggest that Everton are ready to sell Dele Alli just six months after signing him from Tottenham.

Lampard has been unable thus far to revive Alli’s flagging career, and he may be reluctant to try again with Ramsey.

Everton are also priced at 14/1 with BetVictor to sign the Welsh midfielder, but Nottingham Forest is a more likely destination.

Burnley

Betfair has the Clarets level with Everton at 14/1 in the race to sign Ramsey. He would certainly represent a marquee signing for new manager Vincent Kompany, who is bidding to lead Burnley back into the Premier League this season.

However, Burnley’s priorities should lie elsewhere. They have lost James Tarkowski, Ben Mee and Nathan Collins this summer.

Youngsters have arrived to plug the gap, but if Burnley were to splash the cash, a defender would make more sense.

They look pretty well stocked in midfield, with Jack Cork, Josh Brownhill, Josh Cullen, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Maxwell Cornet and new arrival Samuel Bastien vying for places in the team.

Ramsey would not be the most prudent signing, and he would surely prefer playing for Forest in the Premier League.

The Rest

Southampton are next in the betting at 20/1 to sign Ramsey, and that could be an interesting long-shot.

The Saints picked up just five points from their final 12 games last season, so they need to overhaul the squad.

New arrivals have not yet been forthcoming, so Ramsey could be an option. They have taken on older players such as Theo Walcott in recent years, which suggests they may be open to signing a player like Ramsey.

Leeds are priced at 22/1, but it is hard to see him fitting in at Elland Road. All of Jesse Marsch’s signings this summer have been aged 18-25, and Ramsey may lack the stamina required to play at their intense tempo.
