Donald Trump Election 2024 Odds Boosted After Latest Pledge
Donald Trump is on course to secure the Republican nomination for the 2024 US election and has seen his chances of returning to the White House improve after his first major address since leaving office.
The former president spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Florida at the end of February, where he confirmed he would not be creating a new political party.
There had been rumours Trump wanted to break away from the Republicans and take his base of supporters with him – but he will instead remain in the GOP.
“Wouldn't that be brilliant? Let's start a new party so we can divide our vote and never win,” he joked. “We have the Republican Party. It's going to unite and be stronger than ever before.”
And news of Trump’s decision not to form a new party quickly translated into a swing in the US politics betting markets.
Trump Favourite Republican To Win
According to the latest odds from 888, Trump is now 6/1 to win the 2024 US election. That puts him as the firm favourite among Republicans to reclaim the White House, with Nikki Haley out at 14/1.
Trump is still behind Democrats Joe Biden (5/1) and Kamala Harris. The current vice president is the 7/2 favourite to win the next election, when Biden would be almost 82 years of age.
There is still over three-and-a-half years before Americans next go to the polls and before then Trump appears set to engage in a monumental presidential campaign.
The businessman, who is based in Florida, will likely continue his rallies across the country, whipping up support and providing a strong voice of opposition to Biden policies.
Republican Candidacy Betting
And there is almost no doubt in the politics betting markets that Trump will be the Republican candidate come the party’s primaries in 2024.
Trump is currently as short as 3/1 with some bookmakers to earn the candidacy, with Haley out at 8/1. That gives the 74-year-old a 25% chance of being chosen ahead of his party rivals. His former VP Mike Pence is out at 10/1 and daughter Ivanka Trump has seen her odds balloon to 31/1.
Having Trump still in the party will be seen by some Republicans as a major coup, while others would have preferred the controversial figurehead to have moved on.
Democrats had hoped to effectively bar Trump from running for president again by bringing forth impeachment proceedings following the January 6 riot on the Capitol. But the Senate, which is split 50/50 between America’s two biggest parties, voted against convicting Trump for the impeachment.
Meanwhile, Trump has maintained that the election he lost in November by some seven million votes was due to voter fraud, despite offering no evidence to back up his claims.
