We’ve been taught not to underestimate Euro 2024’s so-called lesser fixtures, and so The Panel have high hopes for Friday’s first two games in Germany.

There’s no doubt Netherlands against France on Friday evening is the match of the day, but going by what the tournament has served up so far, the undercard may be better than the main event.

There’s plenty of jeopardy attached to both early contests, starting with the Group E encounter between Ukraine and Slovakia in Dusseldorf at 2pm. 

A strongly fancied Ukraine side were blown away by Romania on matchday one and can’t afford another defeat to a Slovakia side riding high after turning over Belgium. 

Then, at 5pm, Austria and Poland go in search of their first points of Euro 2024 in Berlin in Group D.

Slovakia Vs Ukraine, Friday 2pm

Slovakia have never won two games at a single major tournament, but that is the goal after stunning Belgium. 

Ivan Schranz’s early goal was enough to settle the contest in Slovakia’s favour and an experienced side know that one more point will likely see them through to the last-16.

Francesco Calzona’s men got the rub of the green against Belgium, who registered 1.97 expected goals, and were it not for two goals being ruled out via VAR and Romelu Lukaku having his boots on the wrong feet, it could have been a different story. 

Here, they face a Ukraine side that needs to go for the win to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout phase and better is expected from Serhiy Rebrov’s side after a disjointed performance against Romania.

This game may follow a similar pattern to the Romania clash, in which Ukraine bossed possession but looked vulnerable on the counterattack. 

Slovakia are in good goalscoring form and netted four the last time the sides met so should be able to take advantage of any Ukrainian wobbles, but their luck may run out defensively. 

The Panel expect a talented Ukraine attack to click in Dusseldorf and are happy to back both teams to score at 10/11.

Mudryk May Prove A Menace

Part of that impressive frontline for Ukraine features the much-talked-about Mykhaylo Mudryk, who was his nation’s chief threat against Romania.

The Chelsea wideman registered more shots in the box, successful dribbles and touches in the penalty area than anyone else for Ukraine against Romania, and Rebrov will be keen to funnel the ball to him.

Although Mudryk’s end product can be hit or miss, The Panel don’t believe his odds on betting sites to register a goal or assist reflect how many opportunities he may have.

He recorded two goals and two assists in qualifying for Euro 2024, while he scored seven times for Chelsea last season, and is worth backing to have a goal involvement for an attack-minded Ukraine side.

Poland Vs Austria Friday 5pm

Both these sides can count themselves a bit unfortunate not to have taken anything from their opening matches after giving good accounts of themselves against France and Netherlands respectively.

The French needed a Max Wober own goal to see off Austria, while the Poles were undone by a late Wout Weghorst effort having taken the lead in the game.

Given the stature of the other two sides in Group D, this is the fixture both teams will have targeted for three points and Poland are hopeful they’ll have record scorer Robert Lewandowski available for this crunch encounter after a thigh injury.

Lewandowski carries a significant threat, but The Panel are siding with Austria, who are odds-against on betting apps.

The Austrians had scored in their previous 16 games before blanking against France, failing to capitalise on several promising opportunities, but may have more joy here.

The high-press, high-energy style implemented by Austria coach Ralf Rangnick has caused opponents plenty of problems, and a ponderous Poland team look susceptible. 

Austria has players capable of hurting Poland in Marcel Sabitzer, Christoph Baumgartner and Michael Gregoritsch, and they get the nod for what is a lose-and-go-home fixture.
