17:20 Newbury – Chindwin – 1pt e/w @ 25/1

Chindwin has achieved very little since showing some promise in his first two runs as a juvenile but he has been given a chance by the handicapper and could be overpriced to take advantage. His first run in a handicap came at Goodwood and he didn’t like the track, may not have appreciated the ground and didn’t fully settle in a wider lane than ideal, so I’d be happy to overlook that altogether.

His second, over 7f at this track, led to him being badly outpaced but they went slow there before finishing fast and I think the trip caught him out. He was keeping on a shade at the end and may be happier over the mile. That form has received two boosts from its only two runners, the third and ninth both winning their next starts, and hopefully Chindwin could repeat the trick up at a mile again.

19:05 Hamilton – Gis A Sub – 1pt @ 14/1

Gis A Sub was a talented juvenile and took the same route many of those do, dropping off massively as a three-year-old. From a peak of 106, he finds himself in a handicap off 83 and there’s no doubting he’s capable of doing something more meaningful in the not too distant future. Two of his three runs this season have been on the promising side of the scale as well, offering some hope of a revival.

He seemed in need of the first of those when five-lengths behind Probe in a valuable race at Newmarket, then never travelled at York before returning from seven weeks off with a decent fourth to Significantly at Haydock. Track position didn’t help him there (raced up the centre) and Roundhay Park, who boosted the form and won for the column last week, was a head behind in his group.

Having to make up six-lengths on Khunan will not be a simple task regardless of where the pair raced last time but there is a 6lb swing at the weights, this is a very different track and Gis A Sub has blinkers in use again. They could spark some more interest in racing (worn once before but in a Group 1) and if he gets into a nice rhythm near the front end, he may take enough of a step forward to go well.
