Next St Johnstone Manager Odds: McGlynn And Lynch In Tussle To Replace Levein

St Johnstone parted company with Craig Levein after a miserable start to the Scottish Premiership season and betting sites are speculating who could replace him as manager.

Saints’ 2-0 loss at Hibernian was their fourth defeat in five and proved to be the final straw for the club’s new owner, American lawyer Adam Webb.

Here, we look at some of the contenders in the running to fill the vacancy at McDiarmid Park and the next St Johnstone manager odds.

McGlynn And Lynch Lead The Way

John McGlynn has been working miracles at Falkirk and is the 6/4 favourite to be given another chance of managing a top-tier Scottish club.

The former Hearts boss steered the Bairns to last season’s League One title without losing a game which earned him the PFA Scotland manager of the year award.

The momentum has continued into the new Championship campaign during which Falkirk have won all five games and they are also in the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

McGlynn’s nearest rival is Tiernan Lynch who has enjoyed great success during his seven-year reign as Larne manager.

Following the takeover of the ailing club by Purple Bricks co-founder Kenny Bruce, Lynch helped haul the club off the foot of the NIFL Championship table and win the title in the 2018-19 season.

Since returning to the top flight in Northern Ireland, Larne won the NIFL Premiership for the first time in their history in 2023 and successfully defended their title last season.

They have also won the Country Antrim Shield in four consecutive years and became the first Northern Irish club to compete in the league stage of the UEFA Conference League.

Lynch’s success will not have gone unnoticed and he is 2/1 to cross the water and take charge of St Johnstone.

Wright And Martindale In The Mix

Tommy Wright led Saints to Scottish Cup glory in 2014 during his seven years in charge of the club and is 5/2 to make a dramatic return.

Wright is currently Northern Ireland U21 manager, but would surely consider heading back to Perth where he enjoyed so much success.

David Martindale has had an interesting life, to say the least, but he has not allowed a four-year prison sentence between 2006-10 get in the way of a burgeoning managerial career.

After starting as a volunteer at local club Livingston, Martindale gained his UEFA B licence while working under Mark Burchill.

Martindale had a couple of spells in a caretaker capacity at Livi, but was finally handed the job on a permanent basis in November 2020 and has been there ever since.

The Lions reached the League Cup final in 2020-21 and despite being relegated from the SPL last season, Martindale signed a new one-year deal.

He is also 5/2 with football betting sites to replace Levein as manager.

Gemmill And Murray Are Contenders

Former Nottingham Forest and Everton midfielder Scott Gemmill has no experience of managing a club, but is 3/1 for the Saints job on the back of coaching the Scotland Under-21 team for the last eight years.

Some fans have called for Webb to appoint Ian Murray, who is 4/1 in the next St Johnstone manager odds.

Murray spent most of his playing career at Hibernian during two spells which were interrupted by a couple of years at Rangers and an unsuccessful season at Norwich.

The 43-year-old from Edinburgh helped Airdrie reach the Championship play-off finals in back-to-seasons in 2021 and 2022, and was surprisingly sacked by Raith Rovers in August despite almost leading them to the Premiership.

Neil And Davidson In The Frame

Experienced Scot Alex Neil, who enjoyed promotions via the play-offs with both Norwich and Sunderland, is 5/1 to manage a Scottish club for the first time in nine years, but could Callum Davidson return to St Johnstone?

Davidson famously won the cup double in Scotland in the 2020-21 season, but left the club in April last year.

Now with Queen’s Park, betting apps have priced the Scot at 11/2.

Brown's Reputation Growing

Celtic legend Scott Brown is making waves at Championship side Ayr and is 6/1 for the Saints job, while Billy McKinlay, who has had coaching roles at West Ham (twice) and Stoke, is 15/2.

Former Celtic defender John Kennedy was forced to retire from the sport owing to injury aged just 26 in 2009, but he has hopes of being a coach.

Kennedy was appointed caretaker manager of the Hoops when Neil Lennon resigned in 2021 and is 8/1 with new betting sites.

Five-time SPL winner Lennon, out of work since an ill-fated three-month spell in charge of Rapid Bucuresti earlier this year, is 12/1.
