15:20 Catterick – New Tycoon – 1pt @ 12/1

New Tycoon comes with risk attached as he’s unexposed and I have no idea where his ceiling is, or if he’s above it! On the plus side, he could be better than a mark of 66 if running his race the right way around and that has been the problem so far. He’s overdoing it in the early stages and weakening late on, which could be a trend that he’s going to take forward. But I’m hoping he’ll learn with experience.

The form of his last run at Doncaster has received some boosts from the beaten horses and he was keen again there. Even if he settled down, it’s not the easiest of places to stay in-front at and I do think there’s a track angle here, as Catterick could play to his strengths a lot more. Ground that isn’t so quick could be a benefit as well and any double-figured price is worth having a go at in the hope that he settles.

19:40 Sandown – Snapcracklepop – 1pt @ 14/1

Snapcracklepop is a solid low-to-mid 70’s performer when he’s operating towards his best level but hinted that he might have more to offer in blinkers when third to a subsequent winner at Kempton on his penultimate start. He did best of those who were held up, that despite being keen enough with the headgear on for the first time, and seemed like he was edging towards his peak after two outings following a break.

What he did at Windsor last time didn’t exactly scream that a win was imminent but the finishing speed of that contest was over 109% on a speedy mile and the pace didn’t suit. A stiffer track, slower ground (if the rain comes) and a projected strong pace could all see him being an entirely different proposition here and quotes of 12/1, or bigger, look generous. He’s capable of troubling all of these.
