16:45 Ascot – Sarah’s Verse – 1pt @ 14/1

With ground worries surrounding many of these, Sarah’s Verse is worth chancing. She’s not as talented as some of them and seems to love running at Bath, but her most recent win came on soft. She hasn’t got the chance to run on it all that often and based on how she went through that, and even more testing ground at Windsor the next twice, there could be scope for an improved effort.

After going off the boil a bit, she seemed to be in better form at Newbury last time, running on from a sit in rear to finish little more than a couple of lengths off the winner. Her positioning didn’t help, the race developing before she had a chance to get rolling properly, and I’d be inclined to upgrade the effort. A few pounds of improvement on this different surface and she may well get involved late on.

We've Ranked The Best Betting Apps

17:30 York – Sun Power – 1pt @ 28/1

Alan Brown has maxed out the majority of his horses this season and Sun Power hasn’t been with him for all that long, so there’s a chance that we’ll get to see him in the winners’ enclosure before the season is out. It’s only a few weeks since he made his stable debut over an unsuitable trip at Beverley and he shaped fine, finishing mid-division despite clearly having issues with the tempo offered up.

He went up to 6f here last time and wasn’t helped by a draw in the lowest stall, but kept plugging away on the wing of his group and came home in sixth. It was a solid effort and I think he’ll be happier over today’s longer trip. The ground shouldn’t be a problem and it’ll come down to whether he’s good enough these days. That is up for debate, no doubt, but he’s a big price so I’ll risk a point on the nose.

18:40 York – Cairn Gorm – 1pt @ 11/1

Cairn Gorm comes with additional risk as he’s a bit of a nutter, often wanting to go quicker than his rider will allow. I’m hoping the switch over to York’s track will prove favourable, with it offering the perfect test for him, and would like to see the tactics yield an attacking ride. They didn’t last time at Doncaster, with a lead being accepted, and it made next to no difference as he was still pulling hard.

His run at Windsor saw him lead early on and he was only beaten a length despite it being his first run for 243 days. Those tactics, alongside improved fitness levels, could see him prove tough to catch at this venue and I wouldn’t be surprised if an ease in the ground helped, too. One of his best timefigures was achieved on good-to-soft at a stiff track and an ease on a speed track might just give him an edge.
