15:15 Nottingham – Goodfella – 1pt @ 9/1

Goodfella was strongly supported in the early markets and has since drifted out like a barge from as low as 11/4 to 9/1. That may be a hint that he’s not expected to be ready on his first start for 166 days but the risk is factored into the odds and only a couple of these have been seen this year, both of whom have got to prove that they’ll be able to act up to their best on testing underfoot conditions.

Patrick Owens’ charge will have no problem based on his Newbury second in a decent novice at the backend of last season, where he looked the winner late on until he got pipped coming up to the line. That followed an eye-catching second at Yarmouth in which he showed a good attitude to run on over a trip that was clearly too short for him, and it has thrown up a couple of winners since.

It’s tough to assess what level some of these 3-year-old’s could reach but I don’t think the handicapper has gone overboard in allotting a mark of 81 and there should be more improvement in his locker for having had time to mature over the winter. If he was from a more fashionable yard, I’d guess that his earlier prominent market position would be maintained. But it hasn’t been and he is a nice price now!

15:50 Nottingham – De Vega’s Warrior – 1pt e/w @ 20/1

Mick Appleby’s runners at Nottingham are generally under bet and his record here reads 77-492 (16%) with a level stakes profit of +138. De Vega’s Warrior wouldn’t look like an ideal candidate to increase that as he’s on the quirkier side of things, can be slow from the stalls and is yet to win a race after nine attempts. But he definitely has got the ability to win something and is coming down the weights.

I thought he shaped well at Kempton recently when returning from a 300 day layoff, not helped by how the race developed. They went slow, he was waited with out the back and when he went to make ground in the straight, it was along the rail and that’s rarely the place to be at Kempton. The three who beat him are quite talented horses as well and it may be a better run than the bare form suggests.

That was only his first attempt at two-miles and the likelihood is that he’s going to come on for the run fitness-wise. Coming back to turf won’t be an issue and he was second in a maiden on heavy ground when trained in Ireland, so an ease underfoot may be a help. There’s no doubt he’s a risky play and could do anything from the sublime to the useless, but 20/1 with four places looks value to me.
