Josh Doig Next Club: Celtic Favourites To Buy Scottish Defender
The January transfer window is open for a little while longer and UK betting sites believe Josh Doig is one player who could be on the move before the deadline.
After two seasons in Hibernian’s first team, Doig made the unusual step of swapping the Scottish Premiership for Serie A.
The left-back signed for Hellas Verona in the summer of 2022 and helped them avoid relegation to the second tier in his debut campaign.
Hellas are struggling again this season and Doig looks set to be sold this month.
At least one club has had a bid accepted for the Scotland Under-21 international, who will hope to earn his first cap for the senior side before the upcoming European Championship.
The fact that Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney both play in his position does not help Doig’s cause, but he could yet earn a place in Steve Clarke’s squad.
So, where will Doig be plying his trade come February? Let’s take a look at some of the contenders for his signature.
Celtic Could Bring Doig Back To The Premiership
The latest reports suggest Celtic are set to launch a move for Doig in a bid to bring the Scotsman back home.
A fee of £4.5m would be affordable for the Bhoys, while Brendan Rodgers is said to be on the lookout for a new left-back this month. Greg Taylor, the incumbent in that position, has been unconvincing this so far this season.
Celtic may be eight points clear at the top of the Premiership table, but they cannot afford to take anything for granted.
Rangers have two games in hand on their arch-rivals and there are still two more Old Firm fixtures to come.
Rodgers is therefore keen to add to his squad in January and his team are priced at 7/4 to win the race for Doig.
Rangers Could Rival Their Rivals For The Left Back
Rangers are - as ever - challenging Celtic on the pitch and they could do so in the transfer market too.
The Gers can be backed at 5/2 with football betting sites to land Doig before the window slams shut on February 1.
Philippe Clement’s side are short of options at left-back aside from Borna Barisic, so more depth in that area would be welcome.
Sassuolo, listed at 2/1, are also thought to be sniffing around the defender.
Doig has gone on record to say he enjoys the challenge of playing and living abroad, so he might not be willing to give up his Serie A experience just yet.
Sassuolo have a well-deserved reputation for improving young players, but Hellas Verona may be reluctant to sell to a potential relegation rival.
Leeds Looking To Bolster Squad For Promotion Push
Leeds United are available in this market at 3/1 with betting apps as they seek to bolster their squad ahead of the second half of the Championship campaign.
Left-back is thought to be an area Daniel Farke is looking to improve and Doig has been mentioned in connection with a switch to Elland Road.
Junior Firpo is currently out injured, and although the former Barcelona man is expected to be back soon, Leeds may still look to bring in more competition in his position, not least because Sam Byram continues to struggle with his own fitness.
Leeds do not have a huge amount of money to spend in January, however, so they could be outbid by some of the other contenders to sign Doig.
Marseille Deal Reportedly Off After Collapse In Talks
Up until Monday, it looked like Doig was on the verge of signing for Marseille.
The Ligue 1 side made the left-back one of their top transfer targets for the winter window and it seemed as if Doig was on his way to the south of France.
The two clubs reached an agreement, but Marseille eventually grew tired of waiting after a delay in proceedings.
That is according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who wrote on Twitter: “Olympique Marseille have still not received final green light from Hellas Verona for Josh Doig and they don’t intend to wait anymore.”
That is why Marseille are now outsiders at 6/1 with new betting sites.
Still, UK bookmakers believe Doig may yet move to the Stade Velodrome after all, with Hellas Verona available at just 10/1 to retain him. If you like a long odds option to use your free bets on, then that is a solid option.
Marseille could indeed revive talks, but their stance is unknown at present.
