MK Dons Next Manager Odds: Scott Lindsey Favourite To Replace Mike Williamson

MK Dons are looking for a new manager after Mike Williamson decided to leave the club to take over at Carlisle, who met a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for pastures new.

Football betting sites have opened a market on who will be Williamson's replacement at Milton Keynes. We look at the leading candidates.

Lindsey Leading The Way

Scott Lindsey is the odds-on favourite to take over at MK Dons following Williamson's sudden departure.

Lindsey has been linked with a number of vacancies in recent months, but it looks as though the former Swindon and current Crawley boss will take up the vacancy at Stadium MK.

Leaving a club 17th in League One side for one sitting 19th in League Two might seem like a strange career choice, but it could be that Lindsey is confident of returning the Dons to the third tier.

Lindsey is the 2/5 favourite on betting apps to replace Williamson.

Caldwell In The Picture

Exeter boss Gary Caldwell has entered the running as the new second favourite to replace Williamson as MK Dons boss.

The Grecians have finished 14th and 13th in Caldwell’s first two seasons in charge at the club, and three wins in six have put them in the top half of the table in the current campaign.

Caldwell’s greatest managerial success came in 2015/16 when he guided Wigan immediately back to the Championship as League One title winners, but he was sacked in October 2016 after 16 months at the helm.

A short spell at Chesterfield was followed by a year at Partick Thistle which ended in September 2019 since when he has had coaching roles at Newcastle and Hibernian.

However, his current spell at St James Park is his longest as a manager, but could that soon come to an end?

It would be a strange move dropping divisions, but Caldwell is 6/1 to do just that and take over at MK Dons.

Schumacher Is Free To Take Over

Steven Schumacher has been out of a job since being sacked by Stoke, and he might want to get back in the game sooner rather than taking a break.

Dropping from the Championship to League Two might not sit comfortably with Schumacher, but his experience will serve the club well, if they wanted him to replace Williamson.

Schumacher may prefer to sit and wait for a better job, which is why his odds are 8/1.

Mason Has Waited Long Enough

It's easy to forget Ryan Mason has managerial experience, having done so in a caretaker role for Tottenham twice before.

The first was for seven games at the end of the 2020/21 season, winning four times after Jose Mourinho was sacked. Following the departure of Antonio Conte in March 2023, Mason was given the final six games, during which he won twice.

Mason's playing career was ended after a horrific fractured skull playing for Hull against Chelsea in 2017, but he might be ready to become a manager on a full-time basis.

He's was 12/1 with new betting sites last week, but his odds have shortened to 8/1 which suggests he has a chance.

Ryan Ready For A Quick Return

Ryan Lowe became the first manager to be sacked during the 2024/25 season, when Preston relieved him of his duties after just one game.

North End lost their season opener 2-0 to Sheffield United and that prompted the Deepdale club to make a change.

If Lowe (16/1) is looking for a swift return to management, then MK Dons might be an opportunity he considers.

Ainsworth Might Be Worth A Call

The last time we saw Gareth Ainsworth in a dugout was in October last year when he was manager of Queens Park Rangers.

However, his third spell at Loftus Road ended after a sixth successive defeat, a 2-1 reverse at home to Leicester.

Since then, Ainsworth has spent a lot of time as a TV pundit and MK Dons might be an opportunity he considers if he wants to leave the studio for the sidelines.

Ainsworth was 14/1 for the MK Dons before the weekend, but his priced has since lengthened to 20/1.
