2023 Open Championship Best Prop Bets for British Open

The 2023 Open Championship, the final major of the year, promises intense competition among the world's top golfers aiming to secure their season's crowning glory. The championship, held at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake, marks a return to the iconic venue after a 9-year hiatus, with the coveted Claret Jug at stake.

Rory McIlroy, the 2014 champion at this course, is in a prime position to end his major championship drought. Following his triumphant Scottish Open performance and a second-place finish at the U.S. Open, McIlroy appears keen to clinch another major win.

Golfers Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm trail McIlroy closely as potential victors. Scheffler, in particular, boasts immense confidence, with his tee-to-green game in stellar form despite some struggles in putting.

Tommy Fleetwood, the home favorite, along with defending champion Cameron Smith, are also anticipated to make strong showings. If Smith defends his title successfully, he'll be the first since Padraig Harrington in 2008 to retain the Claret Jug.

Other potential contenders like Viktor Hovland and Brooks Koepka, and perennial favorites Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, complete a star-studded lineup for the final major championship of 2023.

With all this in mind, we've come up with some of our best 2023 Open Championship prop bets ahead of the first tee off on Thursday at Royal Liverpool.

Robert McIntyre top be Top European Player (+2400) at BetMGM

Robert MacIntyre

Robert MacIntyre will need to overcome the disappointment of losing out to Rory McIlroy  by one shot at the Genesis Scottish Open last weekend. But despite that blow, there are plenty of positives for the young Scotsman.

MacIntyre has had good opportunities to claim victory in each of the past two tournaments; losing the Made in Himmerland and coming close to a win the following Sunday, only to be outplayed by one of the world's top golfers.

In his Open Championship history, the Scotsman has impressive records, with T6 and T8 finishes in his first two attempts, and a T34 finish last year. He has consistently made the cuts in this major, demonstrating his strength with two top 8 finishes to date.

Given his current form and apparent aptitude for this style of golf, MacIntyre is certainly a contender at Hoylake and though he might not take home the Claret Jug, there's every chance of him finishing as the best placed European player on Sunday at +2200"

Viktor Hovland to Finish in the Top-5 (+450) at Fanduel

Viktor Hovland

Viktor Hovland has recently showcased an impressive performance in the majors, even leading the 54-hole in last year's event. Following that, he secured the 7th spot at Augusta, came in 2nd at the PGA Championship, and 19th at the U.S. Open. It's hard to ignore the Norwegian's potential in this context.

Despite not being in his best form last week, Hovland still managed to place within the top 25, despite a disappointing final round. Now, he is setting his sights on a course that seems to favor his strengths.

Royal Liverpool is known for favoring powerful drivers, and this is precisely Hovland's forte. There's a solid possibility that this tournament might play out similarly to the 2021 Open Championship at Royal St. Georges, where Hovland finished 12th in his Open Championship debut.

Having finished 12th and 4th in his two Open Championships and securing three consecutive top 20s in this year's majors, Hovland has demonstrated an extraordinary consistency. Currently, he is a major force to reckon with, and it would be wize to utilize his potential by backing him for a top-5 finish here at +450.

Collin Morikawa to Finish Top American Player (+1500) with Bet365

Collin Morikawa

Morikawa has been on an upward trajectory over recent months, culminating in a stellar performance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic where he narrowly lost to Rickie Fowler in a playoff.

His success heavily depends on his ball striking skills and he has gained three or more shots on approach in seven of his last eight measurable events, and gained more than two strokes off the tee in his last three tournaments.

His ball striking skills are in a place where you could confidently expect him to revert to his form of being a potential contender any week he carries his putter with that Strokes Gained: Tee to Green game.

This was demonstrated in Detroit, where he gained over three shots on the field with his putting, putting him in a strong position for a potential win.

It's encouraging to see this upward trend as he prepares for the tournament where he last claimed victory, capturing the Claret Jug two years prior and even if he doesn't repeat that feat, there's every chance he will finish above his countrymen at +1500.

Russell Henley to make the cut (-250) with Draftkings

Russell Henley

There's always a surprise contender that makes their way to the top of the Open Championship leaderboard, and Russell Henley could very well be that surprise this year.

Already a champion this season in Mexico, Henley stands out as the most precise driver on the PGA Tour, a significant advantage, and his iron play has been consistently impressive for several weeks.

The American player has secured the 4th spot at the Masters and 14th at the US Open this season. Given these performances and his ranking within the top 5 for SG Approach in three of his last four starts, a strong showing appears plausible.

While choosing Henley might come with a measure of risk, there's always an unexpected name that emerges at the top of the leaderboard in this tournament, so backing him to make the cut at -250 almost seems a no brainer.
