DraftKings PGA Promo: Quick Overview
2023 U.S. Open: Odds, Predictions & Picks
Matt Fitzpatrick returns as defending champion after last year's one-shot victory; Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm will resume their battle at the top of the world rankings and Rory McIlroy searches for a first major win since 2014
While Scheffler is the favored bet, there is fierce competition from some of the best Official World Golf Rankings players. Curious about the predictions from our betting experts? Let's find out.
MAX HOMA (+2800)
Homa started his professional career slowly, but he now has six career PGA Tour victories, five of which came in the last two years.
Throughout this week, you will undoubtedly discover that Homa is intimately familiar with this course, having set the course record with an outstanding 9-under 61 during the Pac-12 Championship in 2013 while representing Cal.
However, his performance in major championships has not been particularly remarkable, with no finish better than T-40 in his career. Nevertheless, the current scenario presents an ideal opportunity for him to finally make a breakthrough and deliver an impressive performance in his home state.
CAM SMITH (+3000)
His lack of driving accuracy undoubtedly hindered his chances of contending for the PGA Championship, however, it is unlikely to have as much of a negative impact on him this week. In the U.S. Open, Smith has not achieved a finish better than T38 since 2015 when he managed to secure a T4 position. Nevertheless, it can be argued that the course setup for this week's event is unique and differs from anything we have seen since then.
The available data suggests that ball-striking numbers are relatively stable, to some extent, while putting numbers tend to be more unpredictable. Although I agree with this statistical analysis, it often leads us to overlook the skills of the game's most proficient putters.
Smith is currently regarded as one of the best putters in the world and his ability to perform under pressure is exceptional. If he brings his usual magical touch to the greens this week, his odds of 30/1 appear to be a fantastic deal.
PATRICK REED (+7000)
Selecting Patrick Reed at this particular number, especially on a course where the short game holds significant importance, is a highly logical decision.
From the season's first two majors, it is evident that players from the LIV circuit can still compete admirably against the best in the PGA Tour. Their recent performances on the LIV circuit do not seem to directly correlate with their subsequent showings in major championships. Reed has already achieved impressive results, securing a T4 finish at the Masters and a T18 finish at the PGA Championship. Additionally, in his previous eight U.S. Open appearances, he has managed to finish within the top 20 on five occasions.
Even after Brooks Koepka's recent victory, it seems that LIV players (excluding Koepka himself) are still slightly undervalued in the market. I believe taking a chance on Reed at this number is a wise move, and I will supplement it with a couple of more conservative prop bets as well.
