BetMGM New York Sportsbook has received the green light to go live on Monday with its sports betting app in New York, the most-populous state to date with legal sports wagering.

When it launches, BetMGM will offer new customers a sign-up bonus. The standard offer is a $1,000 bonus bet, but it could offer New York customers a special promotion.

BetMGM Becomes Fifth Sportsbook Live in New York

BetMGM will become the fifth online bookmaker to operate in New York since the Jan. 8 launch. The other four are Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel and BetRivers.

In November, gaming regulators authorized nine online bookmakers to offer mobile sports betting in New York, once they were vetted and approved. Three more-populous states, California, Texas and Florida, don’t have legal sports betting.

In New York, four additional online bookmakers have been approved but have not gotten the go-ahead to begin accepting bets. The four still awaiting statutory and regulatory approval are BallyBet, WynnBet, PointsBet and Genting’s Resorts World.

BetMGM New Customers Will Get Bonus Offer

BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt called the announcement of Monday’s launch “monumental news.”

The standard new customers offer at BetMGM is a bonus bet of up to $1,000. But New York customers could get an additional promotion on Monday.

New BetMGM customers in other states that are yet to launch will be able to avail of a similar offer once the brand launches. Take BetMGM Maryland as an example, the state will most likely launch sports betting by the end of 2022.

BetMGM’s parent company, MGM Resorts, owns Empire City Casino, a gaming site and harness racetrack in Yonkers just north of the Bronx, a New York City borough.

BetMGM customers will be able to redeem gameplay for rewards at the casino and horse track in Yonkers and at MGM Resorts properties in New Jersey, Maryland and Las Vegas.

BetMGM, which also is the official sports betting partner of Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, is making rewards available for its customers at games involving the NBA’s Knicks and NHL’s Rangers. Both teams play home games at Madison Square Garden.

Greenblatt said BetMGM now will be able to “fully activate our relationships with MGM Resorts’ Empire City Casino and Madison Square Garden.”

“We look forward to offering customers in New York unique experiences that they can’t access on any other platform,” he said.

New York Online Bookmakers Benefit from Major NFL Games

The first four online bookmakers in New York benefitted from heavy betting activity last weekend during the final full schedule of NFL regular season play and Monday’s College Football Championship game. The University of Georgia won the national title, defeating SEC rival Alabama.

BetMGM and the remaining four mobile operators were hoping for approval in time to capitalize on the NFL playoff games, which begin Saturday with Wild Card matchups.

Games in the NFL always are the most heavily wagered sporting events in the country. This year’s Super Bowl, the league’s 56th, is scheduled for Feb. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, about 20 minutes south of Los Angeles.

Though the five remaining online bookmakers will miss out on major professional and collegiate games this weekend, BetMGM’s mobile platforms will be available to bettors for Monday’s NFC Wild Card game between the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams. Kickoff is at 8:15 p.m. ET.

The Rams are favored by 4.5 points, according to Caesars Sportsbook New York. The game is being played at SoFi Stadium, the Rams' home field.
