Fubo Sportsbook OK’d to Operate Mobile Wagering in Tennessee

Fubo Sportsbook has been approved to begin operating in Tennessee, bringing the number of online sportsbooks in the state to 10.

Mary Beth Thomas, executive director of the Sports Wagering Advisory Council, told Gambling.com on Wednesday that Fubo’s approval is “pending submission of its final platform assessment.”

The company’s licensing approval came at the council’s February meeting. The timeline for Fubo to begin operating in Tennessee has not been set.

There are no brick-and-mortar casinos in the state but the mobile Tennessee sports betting program launched in November 2020.

Since then, Tennessee has placed among the top legal betting states in the amount of money wagered on sports.

College and professional teams in Tennessee enjoy loyal fan support. The state is home to two universities that field teams in the highly competitive Southeastern Conference — the Vanderbilt Commodores and Tennessee Volunteers — and teams in the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Soccer.

Fubo Expands into Other States

Fubo’s entry into the Tennessee market comes as other online betting sites could receive approval to begin operating in the state this year, giving bettors more than a dozen sports wagering platforms to choose from.

Nationally, Fubo Sportsbook began operations in late 2021 and is live in Iowa and Arizona. The sportsbook syncs with fuboTV, allowing bettors to view odds and place bets while watching sporting events, according to the company website.

Fubo Sportsbook also has received market access agreements, through Caesars Entertainment, in Mississippi, Missouri and Louisiana. In addition, the company has market access deals in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Texas.

Gaming Regulators Reconciling Tax Information

In Tennessee, the Sports Wagering Advisory Council is set to meet again on March 10, according to the council’s website.

One topic that could come under consideration is whether tax payments from online bookmakers have been updated since the council took over gaming regulatory duties last month. The Tennessee Education Lottery Corp. previously oversaw gaming matters in the state.

Thomas told Gambling.com that the mobile betting apps and the Tennessee Lottery have provided her office with tax-payment information from the past year.

The council has been reconciling this information to ensure that all are “on the same page,” Thomas said.

“It was simply part of the transition process,” she said. “There is a lot of data to review when you are looking at a year’s worth of wagering information.”
