Oregon Sports Betting is Growing With Addition of DraftKings Sportsbook
It took just one month to see the impact DraftKings Sportsbook has on Oregon.
In its first month of taking bets in the state, Oregon set a new monthly sports betting handle record with $42.9 million in wagers ($22.2 million from DraftKings, $20.7 million from Scoreboard), up 27.1% from December’s $33.7 million and 22.8% higher than January 2021’s $34.9 million. The previous high was $37.6 million in October.
The total sports betting revenue (GGR) for January was $2.3million ($1.2 million from DraftKings, $1.1 from Scoreboard), down 8% from December’s $2.6 million and a decrease of 38.3% from January 2021’s $3.8 million.
DraftKings Finally Live in Oregon
DraftKings Sportsbook officially opened in Oregon on Jan. 18, taking over from Scoreboard and making it the sole operator in Oregon for sports betting.
It’s been over five months since Oregon bettors knew DraftKings would be coming to its state. In an August commission meeting, the Oregon Lottery approved the transition.
“DraftKings is thrilled to embark on this journey with the Oregon Lottery as we build out a coast-to-coast presence with our top-rated online sportsbook for these fans to experience ahead of the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl,” Paul Liberman, co-founder and President Global Technology and Product, said in a media release.
“The Oregon Lottery shares our innovative spirit as one of the most progressive organizations in the real-money gaming sector, and together we look forward to delivering the exceptional online sportsbook products that Oregonians have been anticipating.”
Oregon is the second state where DraftKings Sportsbook has an exclusive lottery agreement. DraftKings became the sole sports betting provider in New Hampshire in 2019 following a deal with the New Hampshire Lottery.
“We’re excited about the improved experience for our players – including the ability to make same game parlay bets. DraftKings is a premier provider in the US,” Barry Pack, Director, Oregon Lottery, said in a media release. “We see benefits for Lottery too, as the shift to DraftKings means fewer third-party service providers and a simpler financial structure for player accounts.”
Top Sports in January
NBA betting was tops in Oregon for January, taking in $17.9 million in bets. Despite not being as competitive this season, the Portland Trail Blazers likely still draw betting interest from the locals looking to back the team. Portland is currently 10th in the western conference at 24-34.
Football had the second-highest handle at $15.4 million, while hockey ($2.7 million), soccer ($1.9 million) and tennis (1.4 million) rounded out the top five. All other sports made up $3.5 million in handle.
